Whether you’ve been a longtime fan of Slow Pulp or are just discovering their enchanting sound, Yard is a must-listen experience that will linger in your heart and mind long after the final notes have faded. It’s undoubtedly one of the standout albums of the year.

Under the Radar

Yard is the sort of album that surprises with how simply and fundamentally excellent it is. It doesn’t shock, it invites, making you feel as if you know every corner of the record even on its first play.

84
Paste
On their sophomore album and ANTI- debut, the Chicago quartet hone, solidify and diversify their slacker indie pedigree.
80
Loud and Quiet

Slow Pulp effortlessly capture the intimacy of emotions and power of introversion, and with an album like Yard, the four-piece are solidifying themselves a legacy alongside greats of this temperament

80
XS Noize

Yard once again bares the soul of Slow Pulp intimately as they craft their signature style. Full of brooding emotion and haunting soundscapes, the band captivate and hold attention.

80
Distorted Sound
SLOW PULP have really defined themselves on this album. It’s just dripping with their signature style and sound, with the heavier tracks really hitting hard whilst the softer ones hit just as hard in a different way.
80
Mojo
Songs like the Breeders-worthy single Doubt reveal serious song-writing smarts.
80
Exclaim!

As a group that have faced their growing pains together, Slow Pulp strike the perfect balance between soft, thoughtful and loud on Yard.

80
The Line of Best Fit

It’s those little moments that best prove that Slow Pulp themselves have found that same type of sweetness, and with it they’ve delivered their best project thus far.

75
Pitchfork
The Chicago band motors through big emotions with clear-eyed sincerity, bubblegum hooks, and mellow arrangements that feel like a warm embrace.
75
Spectrum Culture

Yard is the stagnation and inaction of self-doubt, an indie drawl confidently built on ‘90s suburban nostalgia.

70
Slant Magazine

Similar to Moveys, the songs on Yard alternate between mellow acoustic ballads and fuzzy pop-punk anthems. But whereas the earlier album was full of light, poppy beats, there’s more nuance to be found in the saturated, driving hooks here.

70
Clash
A solid return, there’s a lot to recommend here – for those familiar with Slow Pulp’s influences, or otherwise. Engaging songwriting with a real punch, we’re already looking forward to catching them live.
70
God Is in the TV

Like that debut, Yard is succinct and to-the-point, half an hour of premium indie pop in the vein of maybe The Beths with a little Juliana Hatfield thrown in.

70
Beats Per Minute
Slow Pulp capture what shoegaze and dreampop do best: offering reassurance not that your decisions are right, but that questioning them is what life is about.
70
Classic Rock
Kicking off with the down-tempo contemplations of Gone 2 tends to undersell this Emily Massey-led, Chicago-based, Wisconsin-raised indie quartet. There’s way more Breeders-reminiscent 90s alt. meat on the bones with the likes of punchy recent single Cramps.
70
AllMusic
It makes for a satisfying, if unsatisfied, follow-up that both follows the appealing formula of their debut while letting loose on the full-band tracks.
60
PopMatters
Chicago-based Slow Pulp offer more 1990s-inspired indie rock on their sophomore album. Have they taken a step forward and did they even need to?

2nd grade art class is fire

Solid indie! Good indie! Good indie is good! The last Slow Pulp album I enjoyed but there was something that I felt was missing, and this album fixed that quite a bit comparatively imo. Production is fantastic, and there are some really catchy songs. Absolutely love Gone 2, amazing opener and vibe setter. Love the vocals and again the production is super crisp. Cramps is a banger, that guitar tone is SNAzzy. Broadview and MUD are other tracks that I enjoyed. Good ... read more

yeah, it's a pretty good indie rock album, but I do miss the more great shoegazey songs

Gone 2 really grabbed my attention from the get-go, however, Doubt really kind of let me down...Where Gone 2 had that folk-esque styling, Doubt comes in with an oversaturated riff. Cramps follows in this direction for me, but with a much more engaging styling. But not by much. Slugs, on the other hand, starts beautifully. While it tip-toes on "boring," it keeps the surprising elements in instrumentation and mixing that make this song a banger. Yard is a pretty song, which I now know ... read more
