Underappreciated little album. Seeing this band live was my first experience seeing music I had found for myself, although really it was through YouTube recommending 'Lone Digger'. The time before this was seeing Ed Sheeran live, having received free tickets, and Ed really made me doubt live music before I had really been exposed to it. Catchy, and quite unique. Barkley's vocals work well with Danger Mouses' production for the most part: when it works, it works very well, and when it doesn't work, it isn't for a long enough stretch that the next song won't make up for it.
Not a perfect album, and obviously derivative from its forebearers in soul, but the production lends it a very 2000s feeling; a nostalgic sound which hangs in this weird place between seeming old (Barkley's vocals) and new (aspects of the production). ... read more
