The Telegraph

Inspired by Enigma Variations, the Suffolk-raised superstar delivers 14 tracks about the ups and downs of his life — and they're marvellous.

80
Evening Standard

This album, surprisingly inspired by Elgar’s Enigma Variations, may be the start of a seasonal series.

Hot Press
A slight sway from the usual comes in Sheeran's sixth solo studio album.
60
AllMusic
An album that sustains a mellow, melancholy mood without quite distinguishing itself as a collection of individual songs. Then again, that's kind of the point of the album: it's a pensive soundtrack for a specific season, nothing more and nothing less.
60
The Independent
Inspired by the divisive composer Edward Elgar, Sheeran goes into his mellow, misty-eyed mode for his seventh studio album.

The Needle Drop
Ed Sheeran has gone indie!
40
NME
Four months after the soul-baring ‘Subtract’, Sheeran returns with a cloying, seasonal-themed endeavour.
40
The Guardian

Plodding, genre-hopping songs all end up as unimaginative ballads, their dreary lyrics littered with gibberish – though Sheeran’s hooks remain strong on his second album this year.

The Arts Desk

Autumn Variations lacks the nuance or excitement to make this worth revisiting for a newcomer, but it will certainly go down well with his regulars.

40
The Irish Times
This is not so much a companion piece to Subtract, from just four months ago, as an ugly stepsister.

Bro really named his label Gingerbread Man Records 💀💀💀

Anyways, the English burning potato Pop goat is back with the 2nd record this year. The first one I actually enjoyed quite a bit, it was a huge improvement over =, and it had some really beautiful and personal tracks. Ed is going for a very similar Folky Singer-Songwriter vibe on here, nothing over-produced. And it's definitely one of his better records for sure.

Ed definitely takes a lot of inspiration from Bon Iver on here, ... read more

Bon Iver’s “22, A Million” ahh cover art lmao.

Our trusty boy Eddy is back for round 2 this year with a surprise album, “Autumn Variations.” With this being his first release under his own label and with Aaron Dessner as the sole producer, I really hoped that this would be great. And after listening through it a few times, well, uh, it’s fine. Much better than albums like “Divide” or “Equals”, but also kinda disappointing.

Eddy baby, you're driving me fucking crazy.

Oh well, another Ed Sheeran album, exactly what I needed in my life right now. 5 months after the release of his previous album, which I thought was mediocre, I wasn't very excited for a new Ed album. However, Ed had different plans. I appreciate Ed for trying Weezer's seasons concept, but the first installment in the series is not great.

I will be honest, I don't like Ed Sheeran. I think he is an extremely mediocre singer-songwriter with very ... read more
