There are two very specific things related to BRAT that will always stick with me. The first is the unforgettable coincidence that the first vacation I had been able to take in years (to party-round-the-clock NYC at that) occurred over the same weekend as the release of BRAT. For me, it starts with the simple idea that XTC was a band I had become aware of only by relation to a popular TV show (Gilmore Girls) that featured more than a few of their songs over the course of its seven seasons. During one episode in the first season, “Earn Enough for Us” plays over a scene. I never paid attention to it during prior watchings, or enough so to care who was performing it. While I write this, I am silently screaming/cringing/upset-at the fact that there is only one other review for this incredible album (aside from the fact that it was also her debut and won a Grammy) on this site. And it isn't a good one. What I find so inventive and original here is *not* the fact that Mark Hollis and co. took a dramatic creative turn at the peak of their career, but rather that they did so in a brazen enough way that it caused executives at EMI to cry upon hearing it. The album that got me “into” Fiona since it was the collection of tracks that had me most taken by everything she had to offer musically, and this is still the case. Other than Tidal and FTBC it’s her absolute best work.
