A musical avalanche, a landslide, a natural phenomenon. Not a single predictable second on an emotional whirlwind of an album, a roller coaster ride of emotions. What "John L" completely tears down at the beginning, "Marlene Dietrich" carefully rebuilds afterwards.
Outstanding: The drumming of Morgan Simpson. Also incredible, the gentlemen are only in their early 20's. But what they tear off here purely instrumentally is in a different league than about anything else. But ... read more
The most listened record of the year 2021 and therefore the discovery of the year for me. Since the Idles' first record, nothing has felt as fresh and as euphoric as Turnstile's latest record. Because this is nothing else than a renaissance of hardcore, what is celebrated here.
If you also want to be taken in by the Turnstile magic, just search for blurred cell phone recordings of live gigs on YouTube. Those guys are having the time of their lives! It's still pissed off, but still just as ... read more
And again the Idles right in the front of AOTY 2021, this has almost become a habit in recent years, but it should not be, because it is truly not self-evident on what a level the gentlemen from Bristol simply deliver with each album.
Crawler" feels almost like a new beginning. While "Ultra Mono" from the previous year simply continued their masterpiece "Joy", you notice that they want to tread noticeably new paths with "Crawler". And this also succeeds, the ... read more
Perhaps the best metalcore album of all time. And then much more than that.
There is a lot of SOAD in it, there is a lot of Propagandhi in it, there is "Dillinger Escape Plan" in it, but above all there is a lot of anger in it. So Radical sounds like what it's called. Trump gets a lot of it, a lot of other motherfuckers get a lot of it. "Fuck You, Die." And yet, after 16 songs, you feel neither slain nor hopelessly tired. Rather, it is so that all the pent-up negative ... read more
This album is a timeless masterpiece. It follows in the very big footsteps of ELO, Pink Floyd or 10cc.
Of course saying that, they are automatically out of time, they already were when I saw them in 2017 as the opening band of "Two Door Cinema Club". Unbelievably tight and intoxicating they were already back then, the more I was a bit disappointed by the first album, which simply sounded too much like their great idols and then producers "Daft Punk".
On the second album, ... read more
OG Keemo's "Mann beisst Hund" is nothing less than a masterpiece and perhaps the best German HipHop album of all time, at least in terms of content and concept. Without the, in my eyes, somewhat unnecessary skits and 1-2 album-length fillers, the album would have been even more groundbreaking than it already is. Funkvater Frank's beats are atmospheric, Karim's lyricism is profound. "Birds" gives full-body goosebumps. An album that is as euphoric as it is melancholic. As ... read more
It's getting scary now. Everything Everything deliver their fifth album in a row, which is at least very good or even outstanding.
It must be decades ago since a band has delivered five great albums in a row so consistently.
To everyone who finds the voice annoying: No.
This is just a straight forward "no" in every single way possible.
Uninspired guitar-playing meets a voice that has overcome the nerve barrier for me after only a few minutes into the record. It was really no great pleasure to listen through this whole album - which was surprisingly highly praised from almost all sides, in one piece.
The already mentioned guitar-playing, highly mediocre songwriting and hardly catchy melodies. What do I not understand about it?
I was and am a real fanboy, especially because of the early phase of Biffy Clyro, so my unrealistic expectations are correspondingly high for each new release of the Scottish band.
Of course the new record "A Celebration of Endings" doesn't come close to masterpieces like "Infinite Land" or "Puzzle" - but after the disappointing last "Embryonal" record it has to be said that it does my ears a lot of good to hear Simon Neil screaming again.
So Biffy ... read more
Hardly any other record has ever captivated me as much as Sound Awake has done for years. Already with the first notes on Goliath you enter a detailed sound world that is bursting with perfectionism and musicality. Hardly any other album have I listened to more in the last few years - simply because there is no weakness. The crowning glory are the two last songs as the coherent, epic conclusion over almost 20 minutes. It doesn't get any better than this.
