Honestly this album fucking clears any other Slayer record. This one has sooo many good riffs instead of stuff like Reign where its tremolo picking 4 notes the entire song and call it a day..
Just straight up evil ass heavy metal.
This album has so many bangers but after the first half it feels you are listening to the same exact song again and again.
Recently did a relisten of this and holy shit I didn't remember how incredible this EP is..
I BE DRIPPING HEAD TO TOE EVERYWHERE I FUCKING GO 🗣🗣🗣
Pacifica comes back with more production and explores more sounds in their second album with much more synth work, electro-pop tracks and some slower paced tracks. While they make it work for most of the album, some songs just sound like they're playing their usual and end up being like filler.
Chris Barnes actually sounds good in this record and the production isn't complete ass.
Highlights: Mangled, Skull Full of Maggots, Buried in the Backyard.
Definitely stained by the sound of 80's glam metal but still, IMO this is Yngwie's best work. He is still shredding his ass off while having memorable songs with decent songwriting.
Great musicianship but also a relentless album. Remarkable work with fretless bass too. All-around an amazing tech death album and one of the best in the genre during the 2010's.
Pretty much what I expected their debut album to sound like. Straight up hardcore.
Also "Could you love me?" slaps. Honestly the last 2 tracks prove that they can write stuff that's not just heavy-mosh-inducing riffs inserted in less-than-1 minute songs.
I hope they keep exploring in that direction.
Actually a great gateway album for people that would want to get more into heavier stuff.
Not many bands can pull off the "heavy section with cookie monster vocals into jolly melodic chorus" very well. This band is one of those that can.
Combined with insane guitar solos and the afore mentioned great vocal performances makes for a an amazing album all around.
It definitely falls off on the second half but still fairly consistent for an almost 1-hour album.
Very underrated IMO.
Once you get past the fact that the mixing is abysmal (probably on purpose), this album is pretty fucking bad ass.
Classic.
Absolute masterclass in riff writing.
"Dying in your arms" is the only song that kinda ruins it for me. It's so cookie cutter radio friendly Metalcore it sticks like a sore thumb with the rest of the record.
It's almost perfect. And what a debut album, man.
The guitar work and soloing is so top notch. There was no way you were a kid or teen listening to this and didn't make you to wanna learn guitar.
Yes, it is unapologetically edgy and emo, and I do look at it in a fond way, but that's doesn't exclude the music being well executed.
It's a Metalcore classic and a must-hear in the genre, IMO.
EDIT: ok, after given it a more objective re-listen, it is far from perfect ... read more
Life-changing album, actually.
I remember little me in 2009 hearing Opeth for the first time, it was actually the song "Demon of the Fall" and later it was this album.
The way my brain expanded and came to the realization of "Wow... so this is what music CAN be.."
At this point a lot has been said about this album but what I noticed this time re-listening, even like 15+ years after, is the attention to detail in narratives that go along with the music, mostly in "Dirge ... read more
One my favorites of all time.
What strikes me the most is how well the production and mixing in this album has aged. This shit is LOUD, but everything still sounds distinguishable and punchy. Matter of fact this must be one the best sounding metal albums I've ever heard.
Also that 5150 guitar tone is some of the best recorded. Paired with those sick riffs it's impossible not to headbang listening to this.
It's a classic.
CAN THE DRUMMER DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FUCKING POLKA BEAT!? Literally like 80% of the record you are gonna hear that lmao.
Album slaps tho.
