Deleted my old review because it was so goddamn awful holy fuck
Rating change 20 -> 60
I still stand by my word that this record is 33 minutes longer than it should be - call me a poser all you want, track 5 is still one of the most boring pieces of music ever conceived. I don't care if you're gonna argue about its importance for dungeon synth, the opener does it better, the record did not need 25 minutes of bland no substance noise and it doesn't hold up in terms of ... read more
Massive Conspiracy Against All Life, while not as emotionally potent to me due to not being as evil in sound as The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide or as unbelievably depressing as the Lurker of Chalice self-titled, stands out in Jef Whitehead's discography even amongst the other two, being by far the most brutal and relentless record out of the three.
This was recommended to me by @luancardoso and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, I've at least enjoyed pretty much every piece of music ... read more
Thanks for the rec @Gaynebula
Gothic metal isn't exactly my thing and I'm not too versed into the genre or what to expect from it, so I guess that might explain why I didn't like this all that much to begin with. The vocals are very majestic and the main thing I found appealing of this record, but surprisingly the instrumentation didn't phase me as much as I would've liked. The overall energy of this album is stellar for sure, the ethereal bits especially were very ... read more
As the epitome of what I can only describe as truly powerful death metal, Timeghoul's discography reaches actual perfection in my eyes - be it from it its complex, almost blackened speedy ferocious riffage that scratches all the itches in my metalhead brain, the immaculate relentless drumming that flawlessly sets the daunting atmosphere, or the deep, unforgiving vocalist that adds an almost cosmic feel to the entire record.
The sinister violent tone that all of these songs share is ... read more
Edit: 70 -> 80. Replay value wasn't that big of an issue and this has turned into a favorite of mine.
I'll start this review off by descending into the cliché of saying that The Longing is by far more of an experience than just an album, and I mean it not as pretentious praise, but rather in a literal way, in the sense that it really is something you can only appreciate if you truly commit to it. Unless you make an actual effort and dedicate a proper front to back listen ... read more
Immersive in its almost other-worldly feel and production so completely alien to anything else I've found in Noise Pop and Emo, Hornet Disaster has grown on me to be my Aoty pick so far this year.
This album's unique soundscape scratches an itch at the back of my brain that most music fails to satisfy - as someone who had listened to alot of Weatherday prior to this record, and not to put down their other works as I still enjoy Come In a lot, there isn't a single piece of their ... read more
One of those albums that truly just feel like their own separate world from everything.
Spiderland succeeds the most in building tension out of pretty much every other rock adjacent project I've ever heard. The truly horrifying nature of this album's atmosphere created by the repetitive, nerve-inducing mathy riffs accompanied by constant changes in pace and spoken word sections make for such an impressive, polished record that keeps me on edge at all times. In the same light as ... read more
Haven't written reviews for my hot takes in a while, but Maruja is a band I've struggled to get into and that at this point, I've given up on trying. Knocknarea felt forgettable to me, I didn't care for Tir Na Nóg and now Pain To Power has the worst, most irredeemable sin of them all - sounding awful on top of not feeling particularly interesting.
I love me some Saxophone in Post-Rock but goddamn it, they were absolutely overused here to the point it doesn't hit ... read more
Imo, Master of Puppets stands out as the only true exception to the rule of the highly regarded classic Thrash Metal records feeling bland and generic.
Being real, I don't even like most Thrash Metal - the entire genre just feels so overdone and generic for what it is and most records of the genre fail to keep me intrigued throughout the entirety of their runtime or be anything beyond sounding good. As I dipped more into metal, I believe it to be one of the few subgenres that do ... read more
Like an orchestra composed by tortured souls banished for thousands of years, Dead As Dreams harmonizes complex instrumentals tinged with this lingering nightmare-ish undertone alongside vocals drenched in pure agony, with sheer, vivid emotion in every scream remarkable even for the lights of DSBM. To me, it stands out not only due to the perfect combination of riffs and shrieking, but because of its gorgeous theatrical aspects - pretty much every song has unusual progression for what atmoblack ... read more
Coated in this overwhelming grim veil, 'From Cruel Orbits Streams Death Telemetry' is one of the most uniquely sadistic things I've ever heard, with sheer cruelty reminiscent and comparable to the lights of Leviathan's The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide.
As per the recommendation of my goat @Gaynebula, this obscure piece of black metal immediately made me intrigued as for what it's deal was. I went in completely blind, expecting some breed of cosmic BM hinted at by the ... read more
Eh I really don't want to dislike this to the degree I did because it had some interesting stuff going for it at first and a few elements that could've made for something solid. Unfortunately, the record is so deeply and irredeemably flawed that it's just not enjoyable for me :(
For starters, the pacing in this project is atrocious in an almost comical way. It's unpredictable not because it'll exceed any expectations, but rather because it'll randomly blast the ... read more
Gut-wrenching doesn't do this album justice. This record holds some of the most heart breaking, brutal lyrics I've ever read, accompanied by a vocal performance I can only refer as truly miserable, in the most beautiful sense of that word.
Weirdly enough, as sorrowful, real DSBM proper as it is, it left me wishing for more abundant, frequent riffs and I did not enjoy the random dips into post-punk territory that felt kind of out of place at times.
Rec from @Gaynebula, thank you sm
I'm very impressed by this one ! Rain upon the Impure is a a tad slow at times but an intense, relentless and consistent burn nonetheless. Such a great blend of atmoblack and black ambient, being so immersive as to make me feel as if I was in a different, completely desolate, bleak world entirely in an almost nightmarish manner.
I love me some real satanic bm that does actually dip into satanism proper over some that descend into nihil for the sake of ... read more
Ehh I'm actually listening to this whilst binge-listening to some sasscore/grindcore but this was just not good. Even for a literal 4 min long EP, I expected an alot more prevalent math riff that just isn't there. Just wasn't interesting, memorable or fun, which is a very hard feat to pull off for how short it is and makes me think the record is just straight up bad.
89 follow score (91) oh fuck
For indie rock standards, this feels very bland and incoherent. I straight up hate their vocalist and the lo-fi stuff just doesn't harmonize with any style they tried to get going on.
This record reminds me of Turn On The Bright Lights with the very characteristic sound of the 2000s indie rock scene. But unlike this album, TOTBL has an actually amazing lead singer and is accompanied by instrumentation that doesn't sound like a badly produced soundcloud ... read more
I've near given up on attempting to separate the art from the artist in DSBM since the genre is so plagued with disgusting people, so I usually just listen to the stuff in ways that won't give said pieces of shit money.
However when the music itself is tainted with outright anti-semitism and nazism at it's core, it's straight up unjustifiable and unredeemable.
The record is barely any good, I'd have given it a 20 or so had I not stopped to read the actual lyrics in ... read more
You would not believe how happy I was when I read this track list. Genuinely started kicking my feet up in the air and screaming into a pillow out of joy.
On their last live performance as a duo, Willy and Star revisit their older works from before wetdream. And my god, this was so necessary. I absolutely adore Rip Yr Skin Off and Heartbreak and Handjobs but I'd be lying if I said I preferred their original versions over this. Though I obviously prefer their final record wetdream and ... read more
