MGMT - Little Dark Age

I'm gonna keep it real with you.

2018 is perhaps my favorite year for music...ever. The amount of quality releases from this year is unparalleled, at least in my eyes, and one of the greatest examples of that notion is Little Dark Age. I found this album on a whim while browsing my recommendations on Spotify, and I was floored. From the moment She Works Out Too Much began, I was hooked up until the end.

Little Dark Age is the best of everything MGMT has offered thus far in their career, ... read more

it's clipping b*tch EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

This is the debut mixtape from Clipping, which is a group that I have a lot of love for. I love the minimalist and cacophonous instrumentals, the abrasive atmosphere of their music, Daveed's succinct and stone-cold rap delivery. It all mixes together to paint this grime-covered story about city riddled with crime and corruption. This record has nothing to hide, and will be upfront and honest the whole way through.

What amazes me most is ... read more

woah

This is one of the few albums out there that I can describe as being "transcendental." The few other albums that come immediately to mind when I think of the word "transcendental" are the Fishmans' live albums, Deathconciousness, Loveless, and Lift Yr. Skinny Fists. This record sounds eerie and otherworldly without sacrificing an ounce of character. It doesn't masquerade itself as being something that it isn't. It knows what it is and works to its own strengths.

I was never a huge fan of Kanye West or Kid Cudi. I have no nostalgic connection to either of them, which I know is a factor in all of this, and I just find a lot of both of their material more underwhelming than anything. Man on the Moon has some amazing songs, as does My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but neither of those projects "wowed" me.

But THIS?! This W O W E D me.

Kanye West and Kid Cudi show all of their talent off in this album's very brief runtime. The two hit you with ... read more

UNDERRATED

This is yet another artist I was introduced to through a collaborative playlist I made with my friends. The first time I heard the opening track Sideshow, my mind was blown. The way every instrument comes through, and the fact that there are so many them, AND the fact that it all works so incredibly well together just makes me swoon every time I hear it.

But I mean the rest of the album couldn't have been THAT good right? WRONG!

This is one of the most consistent albums I have ... read more

It seems all of my favorite albums come with stories attached to them. In my freshman year of college I joined my college's rock band, and one of the first songs I was told to learn on drums was Red Barchetta. It was one of the most difficult pieces of music I ever had to learn up until that point. However, in my weeks of practicing, I grew attached to the song and by extension the entire album.

And now...it's one of my favorite albums period.

This is THE prog rock album. It is the ... read more

About a year ago, my friends and I created a collaborative playlist and the whole thing essentially became a series of us swapping artists between one another that we happened to enjoy and getting each other addicted to our musical tastes. I got one of my friends into LCDSoundsystem, and he got me into Two Door Cinema Club.

And I just wanna say...Ryan...if you're reading this...thank you.

Tourist History is cavalcade of bite-sized songs, all of which having their own vibe to them. Every song ... read more
