Midcity is exciting stuff, not only because forces open the doors even wider for risk-taking and experimentation in hip-hop, but because of the skill and energy that it displays in doing so.

Midcity is the debut of Los Angeles based Hip-Hop collective Clipping. with lead man being the incredibly talented Daveed Digs, so going into this project I was ecstatic, yet I was so incredibly underwhelmed by the sound of this album that has not aged well at all.

In the 2010’s, when artists such as Death Grips were just hitting the scene with an incredibly experimental approach to Hip-Hop, Clipping. had released their first debut “Midcity” with acclaim coming for the very ... read more

There's something about the atmosphere that envelops midcity that none of the other clipping projects can replicate. It's an industrial cacophony of abrasion and lo-fi noise, but the raw minimalism of it is what really brings it all together. It really immerses you into the bleak, dystopian ghettos in which Daveed portrays in his lyrics, best ... read more

i dunno, midcity never really clicked with me. i'll give clipping credit, it's raw as fuck, its loud, it's noisy, and its an exciting debut. but eh, i just find a lot of it to be boring. some of these instrumentals are just TOO minimal to me. a perfect example is the song five. there is barely even a beat here, it's just the occasional like box falling down a mail chute noise and muffled gong hit, but that's just not enough for me. mobb2it's high-pitched drony noise gives me a bad headache ... read more

clipping.’s debut album is noisy, abrasive and oh-so raw while also being consistent and fun to listen to. Daveed Diggs’ flows are great here and “midcity” is a very interesting project overall. The lyrics could use some work, though.
