Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper

Really enamored and my expectations are exceeded and im shocked that he managed to greatly surpass even haunt you here. I believe that this record strikes with a homogenized array of influences that could only be executed in a terminally online and equally homogenized era of music. I tweeted recently about how I felt that in todays day n age, the far extremes of music which at one point in time were seen as totally seperated are more conjoined then ever. Granted this was tweeted snarkily in ... read more

lua trilogy! - Worldwide Domination
90

this project showcases just how complementary her production is when other vocalists put different spins on it, as well as just how much of a breath of fresh air the spaciness is in the current underground. Not to say nobody does space-y airy beats, but nobody seems to capture the pocket she does.

Gris - Il était une forêt...
100

This is simply one of those records where the viscerality of it's sound stands as far more impactful than could ever be described by the words of those affected by it.

I have listened to barely any DSBM at all, but if I were to compare the sound of this record to any standard black metal projects i have heard, this is in a lane of it's own down to it's most meticulous components. The tone of voice exhibited by Icare is one of a kind, the tone of the guitars is so distinct to ... read more

lua trilogy! - 新世紀 Sunbelt Princess
100

Lua gave me the honors of listening to this album early (hence how much I have to say so early into this record's shelf life.) After listening to it a few times, there is a myriad of reasons why I, as someone who unsurprisingly has a giant amount of bias towards lua's work, believe this record is a crown jewel of her discography on multiple fronts.

新世紀 Sunbelt Princess stylistically sees lua mastering a lot of musical components shes shown proficiency in in other fields ... read more

TURQUOISEDEATH - Kaleidoscope
90

In what i have heard from this genre at the time of writing this, (14 projects, which is respectable but not even a dent in the vast sea of bedroom electronic artists in this field) nothing has really branched out in the way that turquoisedeath has to my ears. I feel like in a style so contingent on its focal point of breakbeats, a lot of people fall into the seas of monotony; often limiting themselves from experimenting with what is against the grain from what they're used to. That's ... read more

Lua Trilogy! & Cybercrasherstv - overromantic

Lua trilogy collaborating with cybercrashers, a name I had heard loosely around in circles of underground music but was otherwise unfamiliar with, honestly resulted in one of the most cathartic listening experiences I've had all year and especially in lua's discography which is a fucking insane compliment to the record considering she has made some of the most genuinely impactful music to my life ever. It's kind of off the charts in every regard honestly. The chemistry displayed ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
60

I'm kind of pacing back and forth metaphorically trying to find the best way to put this without just coming off as asshole-ish, and I think it's honestly to not act like it's any more elaborate than it actually is. I've been a really big fan of JPEGMAFIA"s work since I was in middle school. He was honestly one of my big forays into experimental music, with the other main staples of experimental hip-hop in clipping, and death grips. A pretty typical pipeline I am no ... read more

Natural Snow Buildings - Daughter of Darkness
100

For an album that existed in my head as one of the most intimidating listens I would ever do, This record really embodies it's monolithic status. You can tell even before clicking play, that this record is a really "big" experience; all by just looking at the duration of it. That same duration was the exact thing keeping me away from this whole thing. I constantly wondered if this project could do the unheard of task of pacing itself and remaining engaging for 7 and a half ... read more

Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
20

Conceptually an album about how eminem returns to his roots of the 2000s isn’t an awful idea but it really just highlights how desperate he is for the spark he had back then and also how lyrically how out of touch he is. His raunchy edge lord lyrics aren’t ever clever, they’re not composed of clever wordplay or any sort of wit that something like “without me” was back in 2002, it’s just, there. Nobody anymore will hear a constant running gag about the ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - meet the grahams

shit like this is what makes milestones. Hip hop history to remembered for decades to come. Human history above all else

💃 - As Long As You're Here!
90

This is far from a bad thing when I say this, but this is the least personable lua trilogy album potentially this far. It 100% hones in on locking in listeners to a long, entrancing groove that is both textured and intricate and easy to enjoy the beauty of casually. It's all encompassing and doesn't need to sacrifice any listenability to get there. It's always a treat to have something that is so fantastically enjoyable when taken in any context. With that being said, as I did listen to this ... read more

Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee
80

To preface everything im going to say that this is probably one of the most unfamiliar artists i've ever checked out as even though i am aware of women as a band who's very often recommended to me, i have not a single clue what their music sounds like or what genre it is for that matter. This extends to cindy lee as a solo artist as well, with the only thing given to me in that regard is rateyourmusic pages and how it has artistically grown over the years it's been intact. With all that in ... read more

Eunuchs - Harbour Century
70

Seemingly coming out of nowhere after a debut that went under the radar for a majority of listeners, I am impressed by how fresh of a take this is on prog. I am not the most knowledgable on avant-prog music but i can say that nowhere in what i have heard or in the other strands of hardcore music have i witnessed a ferocity such like this one, which really made it more baffling when i saw people just rattling this off as a "black midi clone" when even though they may have plenty of ... read more

samlrc - A Lonely Sinner
90

For this artist seemingly coming out of nowhere at least from the looks of thing's i was surprised at how mature this album sounds out the gate, lushly arranged and jawdropping just to say the least. Do you ever get that feeling, whether it's on a walk or if you're really in the "my life is a movie" mindset just in your day to day life, where you'll be listening to music and something happening will correspond exactly as a climactic moment in a song happens and just kind of leaves you ... read more

Yung Lean - Psykos
70

Yung Lean and Bladee go in a very experimental direction for themselves on this and it pans out in a way that is really satisfying to here just in the sense of hearing them do something completely new, but i think there is still some development skill wise. It has some fantastic moments but also on occasion meanders, doesn't fully develop, or ends slightly abruptly. All of these are definitely far from complete mood killers in their own respects, but it happens pretty frequently to the point ... read more

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine
60

Ariana Grande in her career has released some pretty great wholistic projects in her career that while still sporting singles that garnered ludicrous radio play and massive chart success played the role of an album just as well. Because of this I actually had pretty high expectations given A) i've never listened to positions so her recent catalogue to my ears has been standout in terms of pop, and B) thank u, next and sweetener are both great in the aspects i touched on earlier. Maybe this led ... read more

MIKE & Tony Seltzer - Pinball
70

Definitely a much less extravagant release from mike and a detour from his forward thinking approach to various strands of experimental and abstract hip-hop in favor of something a little bit more traditionally east coast. Instead of that being a weak point it proves MIKE's versatility further and that he's definitely not bound to his experimentation in terms of making a good project. The stripped back rawer nature of this project displays a more skillful presentation on the mic from MIKE, as ... read more

Kim Gordon - The Collective
50

Kim Gordon on this record production wise can capture a really nice industrial rock soundscape that's equal parts crushing and unnerving most of the time albeit ones that definitely meander a bit but the thing holding this record back for me is how the hip-hop influence painted across this record kind of feels very ham fisted and not really something that she innovates on production wise nor vocally. I like Kim Gordon's delivery and have throughout her discography, her deadpan despondent style ... read more
