Ponte Del Diavolo - De Venom Natura
75

If I could describe De Venom Natura in one word, it would be: enchanting. This album expands upon Ponte del Diavolo's subversive sound which combines post-punk, occult doom and black metal.

Erba del Diavolo is a wonderfully captivating vocalist, and completely unpredictable with her execution, whether through spoken word verses, raspy growls and siren-like operatic wails. But what sets Ponte del Diavolo apart from their contemporaries is their use of dual bassists, an uncommon set-up ... read more

Converge - Love Is Not Enough
90

Converge are fucking nuts. In over three decades, this band has never once lost their touch, and by the sounds of it, they never plan to. The band have once again proved why they are considered one of the pioneers of their genre. Love Is Not Enough is a bold, abrasive, violent and downright filthy record, leaning into both their classic hardcore and deathmetal influences.

Bannon's thunderous vocals bleed pure confidence, and he sounds better than ever before. The band are masterful in ... read more

YUTA - PERSONA
65

i decided to give persona another listen, and i still think it is weaker and a lot more generic than his debut ep 'depth'. with that said, it is very clear that yuta has a lot of potential and a wonderful career ahead of him in j-rock, and i really want to see him flourish.

yuta's vocal range is incredible. he has strong cleans and a deeply emotional tone for more intimate tracks, but also has a really good scream/growl in him that i'd love to hear more of. sadly, the ... read more

STAYC - Stay Alive
45

this is so disappointing. this is less of an album and more like a repackage of 95% of pre-released singles and japanese versions of stayc's hit songs, with three or so new tracks thrown in between. mwauh is okay, very much in-line with stayc's fresh and youthful vibe and i enjoyed satellite as well. if these girls don't renew their contracts, i wouldn't even be surprised but it would be a shame if they disbanded or were unable to continue under a new company that would be ... read more

Karnivool - IN VERSES
70

after thirteen years (!!), my hometown legends have made a triumphant return, and karnivool have once again proved why they remain the cream of the crop out of australia's prog/alternative scene. much like the time the band spent working on this material, 'in verse' is not an album to rush through. 'ghost' is a remarkable opening track which almost feels like the band are telling us they're finally back. in true karnivool fashion, the rest of the album is filled ... read more

Joyce Manor - Million Dollars to Kill Me
30

ok well. there was bound to be a dud in the discography and it may as well have been this one. for such a short record, the songs feel meandering and uninspired which ultimately makes it feel like it drags out much longer than it actually is.

Joyce Manor - 40 oz. To Fresno
50

this one may need to grow on me. there are signs of their early punk grit scattered throughout here. the songs feel playful, zesty and mature, but they are taking me a while to click with on the record. that said, i've always enjoyed hearing them perform material from this album live, which is a huge testament to how tight their live performances are.

this is a decent return to form after the disappointment that was million dollars to kill me

Joyce Manor - Cody
75

i've been revisiting my love of joyce manor and man this album really hit me like a truck on this listen now that i'm older. this album feels so different to their previous records, perhaps it comes with their growth as people and as a band. the songs feel cohesive and thoughtful, exploring their core indie/pop-punk influences but somehow remain fun despite lacking the raw sound of their earlier albums.

MØL - DREAMCRUSH
90

Bold, lush, and decadent are the only words I can use to describe how richly textured, and thoughtful this album is. The composition is masterful, allowing guttural vocals and crushing riffs to ebb and flow, before melting into ethereal instrumentals and silky cleans. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful albums I've heard in my lifetime.

Sébastien Tellier - Kiss The Beast
65

there is no other artist on the planet who masterfully walks the line between the overpriced polyester palace known as Glassons and the soundtrack to a porno with an overly convoluted plotline

Joyce Manor - I Used to Go to This Bar
70

joyce manor are finally back with a brand new album, and that means some of the catchiest 19 minutes of music you'll hear all year. this band have always remained consistent in their modern emo/punk formula, curating a selection of short, punchy, songs filled with cheeky, wistful lyrics that are easy to sing along to. every joyce manor album feels like a coming of age film, a vignette of ordinary experiences that everyone can relate to. it's extremely on the nose, given they're ... read more

underscores - Do It (Yves Remix)
90

crazy how we're only 23 days into the year and we're getting one of the best collabs of the past decade? YUP

DZ Deathrays - Easing Out Of Control
40

dz deathrays make for great live performers, but their studio releases leave so much to be desired. their artistic vision feels perpetually trapped in their early 20s. this album tries to capture the highs of their early albums but falls short of realising that vision. this one is a little too bland and they're falling extremely short in comparison to some of australia's best rock exports right now.

Basement - Colourmeinkindness
95

each song feels so weighted with emotion. it’s raw, honest, and such a huge improvement from their debut album. it’s the the perfect blend of grunge, shoegaze and emo. the mixing is impeccable and appropriate for an album that feels as though it belongs in the late 90s.

Basement - Promise Everything
80

aquasun and promise everything are two of the best basement songs they've ever written. it's a solid album, one that i find myself drawn to more as i've listened to it over the years. it plays too close to the safer side of alternative rock mainstream but still has a lot of heart.

EXO - REVERXE
35

Reverxe is middling at best and a soulless cash grab at worst, struggling to maintain cohesion throughout, but this comes as no surprise to given the amount of drama leading up to this comeback.

It's a shame that after a long hiatus, EXO weren't given the proper opportunity to demonstrate how they have refined their skills as performers, both individually and cohesively as a group. SHINee's eighth studio album, HARD, is one such example of how experienced idols shouldn't ... read more

CHUU - XO, My Cyberlove
75

Chuu's vocals have matured a lot over the past year! She has always been a vocal powerhouse, that much was proven during her LOONA days, but what I love the most is how her solo career has allowed her the freedom to experiment with her tone and range, exploring new genres such as synth pop, r&b/jersey club, garage. Sure, she can belt out plenty of high notes, but that's not all I want to hear her do! The title track sounds like a cool, mellow older sister of Chocolate, whether or ... read more

KATSEYE - Internet Girl
0

Internet Girl is deliberately annoying in the vein of 2010s rock pop where songs were loud, abrasive, and nonsensical. The only reason I can come up with as to why this song exists is so a verse like "Eat zucchini, eat zucchini! Can you read me like the emoji?" can be used in tiktoks and instagram reels. It's a shame because Katseye are extremely talented and I wish they were allowed to establish their identity as a group rather than staying boxed into creating music for the sake ... read more

에이핑크 [Apink] - RE : LOVE
60

genuinely thought apink disbanded? anyway, I'm glad that isn't the case! chorong's lines has a really beautiful tone which harmonises well with hayoung's husky vocals. the EP is short, sweet, and a little too safe, but overall enjoyable. it's nice to see a 2nd gen girl group releasing music!
