Oh yeah, it's Swans time baby.
Starting with the No Wave classic, Filth. (I can't believe this album is 42 years old btw.) On a relisten, I don't remember this shit being so damn groovy! Stay Here is a great opener for what this album has in store. Its got that chugging and relentless rhythm that Swans is so expertly good at, especially later down in their discography. Near the end of the song, Giras rough and hypnotic vocals tire down as the drums and contorted guitar continue to intensifiy and overwhelm the listener until fading out.
I remember when I first listened to this album it was very hard for me to get through it. Mainly because I didn't like the repetitive nature of it. Although I didn't like the repetition at first, I've grown to appreciate how tasteful it is on this album and how repetition like this in music isn't always a weakness. The heinous lyrics on Filth also represent this idea, being very assertive, repetitive and unsightly. As well as Giras vocals of course, which are phenomenal at selling this. He is an amazing vocalist.
Speaking of Giras vocals, my favorite song on this album is Blackout! His vocals and the drums on this song are scrumptious. I also really like the chaotic lyrics and I find myself quoting it in my head a bunch because of how memorable his vocal delivery is. The song that made me really appreciate the repetition on the album is definitely Power For Power. Almost 6 minutes of pure chugging No Wave bliss. The guitar on the track is so hypnotic and addictive, especially near the end of the song as well as the noisy drums which scratched my brain.
Overall, Filth is a very solid first album. While being the most least accessible album by them compared to some of their other projects, I believe that if you have the patience, this listen can be very enlightening due to its uncomfortability. Enlightening in the sense of you either fuck with it heavy or are immensely disgusted, or both. And that's why I love this album. It is relentless and unmerciful to the listener and yet is done so tastefully, reveling in it's malice.
