I'm not usually a fan of old school hip hop with some exceptions, but this is definitely one of those exceptions. This guy is from Brooklyn and he lets you know that in damn near every song. My favorite aspect of this album is that unlike some of his contemporaries, Mos Def doesn't stick to a single sound through the album. This is a white man from New York speaking about how he's grown in the city and the duality of both loving it and despising what has happened on it as a result of gentrification and digitization that has taken place in the city. It's unapologetically New Yorker and it shines light on personal struggles and growth in a very soothing way. The lyricism reminds me of J Cole at times. One of the best produced albums of all time and i really enjoy how black thought combined new and older east coast artists on this one. Also the cover seduces me.
