Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Meh. I don't know, this album coasted along for me. Every plus this album had for me is shadowed by a negative I found.

A nice positive is that the instrumental atmosphere of Pink Floyd returned (boosted by Richard Wright's own return), but I feel like it's one of the weakest of any Pink Floyd album. It doesn't even match the atmosphere in something like Saucerful of Secrets in my opinion.

Gilmour's solos here aren't bad, but when you stack enough of them in an ... read more

I don't really have a single problem with this album, it's pretty much perfect in its aquatic-based instrumentation. As usual, Aoba's vocals are as tranquil and soft as a silken cloud. Absolutely mesmerizing overall.

The album is brilliant. Listening to this has terrified and taught me things I must know whether I wanted to learn or not. I will not rate it - I feel to rate it would restrict it. Fly high Kai. <3.

I'm not going to sit here and bash on a band whose album I didn't like but yeah, I just don't get this album. If you like it more power to you though.

I've listened to this album 3 times and all 3 times I felt just... nothing. I would just find every song to be meh to fine, with the exceptions of The World Has Turned and Left Me Here, In the Garage, and Buddy Holly, those songs don't drag.

To me, it feels like a lot of these songs just start off solid, then they keep going, and just keep ... read more

Edit: No longer my favorite but whatever.

About time.

People nowadays often discredit this record in favor of Floyd's other records, such as Wish You Were Here and Animals. I can definitely respect a person's opinion saying that those records may be more exploratory, and I can definitely respect a person's take saying that those other albums are their favorites over this one. They're all great, it's Pink Floyd after all.

However, for me at least, I prefer this one. ... read more

Well, this was a big change. Like always, I'm going to talk about the insanely good things about this album first.

There are quite a few delights here. Biscuit Town is a nice quaint opener for the album. Dum Surfer is one of the best songs Krule's ever conceived. Emergency Blimp and Vidual are very interesting with nifty instrumentals.

The reason this shrunk on me so much is similar to London Calling: the second half. Outside of Vidual, Emergency Blimp, and Half Man Half Shark ... read more

OUTDATED

It took a second listen to click with this one.

The first time I listened to it, I absolutely adored the first half, but thought the second half fell off a cliff. Now, even though I do still think the first half is by far the best, I definitely enjoy the second half.

Considered by many the first great Beatles album, I can very clearly see why. Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man and Think For Yourself are all excellent highs this album has for me. All of them ... read more

This album has some amazing songs (pretty much the whole first half minus Jimmy Jazz and Rudie Can't Fail are either great or some of my favorites, along with Death or Glory) and there are other solid tracks like The Right Profile and Clampdown; but man, the second half drags this down so much for me, the sound just grows stale by the end. If the 4 songs past Koka Kola were more memorable for me, I would like this a lot more. Train in Vain is good, but not good enough ... read more

I prefer this over MOP. I feel like this one has more diversity and Call of Ktulu is probably my favorite track on either album. Higher highs in general, consistency about the same. Basically a matter of one having a higher floor. I’m much more likely to relisten to this in the future, could go up a fair amount potentially.

The Beatles - Abbey Road

I probably need to explain this one, since this is definitely more of a personal perspective.

First off, I am not blind to this album's influence. The Beatles pretty much created a ton of modern music with this album. The audio production on this thing is also insane. This is one of THE albums in music, you just kind of have to listen to it. And I do respect it for its massive impact.

Delving more into the positives, I quite like the first 3 songs (yes, even Maxwell's Silver Hammer). Come ... read more

For me this is peak Beatles. Out of all of their albums this has the most tracks that I find incredible - Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, She Said She Said, etc. It's rock solid in other areas as well, like Here, There and Everywhere, I'm Only Sleeping, and For No One.

Yes, it has Yellow Submarine. But I don't really think the song is *that* bad, there are worse Beatles songs in my opinion, though I will concede it certainly doesn't match the other songs. Couple that with me not loving Good Day ... read more

One of the most rock-solid records ever made, it's just excellent. To this day, I cannot for the life of me identify which track I feel is the relative worst, they're all incredible. An absolutely beautiful tribute to Syd.

David Bowie - Aladdin Sane

It's a sharper and more abrasive album than Ziggy Stardust, and it generally works. Watch That Man is an excellent opener with tons of energy; the title track is my favorite from this record, with a great combo of piano and guitar. From there, each song continues to be high quality (until the 7th track for me but I'll get to that).

As for the lyrics, they aren't as much of a rigid overarching story as Ziggy Stardust, instead feeling more like a collection of vignettes, which I'm perfectly ... read more

Thought I'd check this out since I saw Flowtr review it, though granted my musical ear is a far cry from his. Plus it’s been a bit since I heard some breakcore.

I think it's a nifty album with a lot of charm. My thoughts are similar to Flowtr's, but I'll add a few things that I noticed:

No song really dragged the whole way through, bits and pieces here and there maybe but no song felt boring, there was always something to enjoy.
I respect the track order, it really seemed like the ... read more

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

83 -> 87 -> ~92 -> 88

EDIT: Back down to 88 because the midsection of the album kind of drags and the second half is inferior to the first half in my opinion.

It took 3 listens, but Ziggy Stardust has finally clicked with me. Bowie tells a spectacular tale that speaks volumes about resiliency, optimism, hope, and tragic degradation; and all of it is linked with Ziggy Stardust, the nucleus of this album.

Five Years and Soul Love provide a great introduction to the album. Musically ... read more

In my eyes, this album is sort of a worse version of Meddle (not that there's anything wrong with that!).
Both Meddle and AHM have 20+ min tracks that are the centerpieces of the album, and I see both as great, though I do prefer Echoes by a significant margin.
After that though, I feel Meddle beats AHM on the front of having a better supporting cast of songs. Both have songs that I'm not in love with at all (Seamus and Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast respectively) but Seamus beats APB by far. ... read more

Absolutely wild album. Gets better on every listen for me. The first 7 tracks have become some of my favorite songs of all time, and even though I can't say the same for Overload, it's still a good song.
This album just is all over the place, but it's so well executed.
