It’s a decent song til we hit the chorus. Aside from the grating vocal filter, i liked the pre chorus. It set up the chorus for something angsty and expressive but only the instrumental seems to pop off, and even that isn’t super satisfying.
edit: The more I sit with it, the more I feel like this could've been a 100 if she cut Sweet, Judah Smith Interlude, and the last 4 tracks. Grandfather... is great thematic closer; covers all of the album's subject matter, instrumental is beautiful and grand, and she's singing her heart out. Let The Light In would serve as an epilogue (think Ariana Grande's TUN & BUWYGIB or SPELLLING's Revolution & Sweet Talk) of sorts; something a bit less emotionally severe to sit with that loosely ... read more
better than her usual alt pop garbage but not by much. i wondered if her completely abandoning the tacky baby aesthetic meant she would also expand her musical horizons but she’s still firmly planted in that equally tacky alt pop sound. as is the case with pretty much every other song of her’s, DEATH finds Martinez filling the song with cheap production tricks to hide the fact that she has nothing of substance to say or any creative musical ideas to display.
