Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
73

On first listen, this album sounds pretty good, but definitely dated. And I like the album cover. But when it comes to the substance of the music, I don't think it really means anything to me yet. I might come around to this, or it may grow on me, but at this point in time it's simply a "pretty good" album.

Jello Biafra - Prairie Home Invasion
68

"Prairie Home Invasion" is a striking, interesting, country-folk-punk-y piece of music history that I think is pretty good. The songs are creative and have almost a timeless sound to them, and the lyrics are... fine. The political messages of each song are stated loud and clear, which is sort of both a benefit and a detriment in my eye. On one hand, punk and folk are not genres notable for political subtlety, and being overt in what you want to say prevents people from skewing your ... read more

Shinichiro Yokota - Shinichiro Yokota Presents Do It Again and Again
81

Very smooth album of house music with some jazz and other elements throughout. Very good focus and/or chill music with minimal vocals. Will definitely return to this in the future when I need this vibe.

Carly Rae Jepsen - The Loneliest Time
77

The queen of Canada has returned with yet another solid pop project for us. As the title suggests, this album feels very personal and, at times, lonely. But it balances out the introspection by being upbeat and fun at times too. Some would argue that this comes off as jarring or lacking in thematic unity, but for me personally it works pretty well. Being alone does not necessarily equal miserable or hopeless feelings at all times. Periods of loneliness and yearning for connection can often also ... read more

Barenaked Ladies - Everything to Everyone
76

I really enjoyed this album, hearing it for the first time on its 20th anniversary.
Everything to Everyone is, admittedly, nothing special or groundbreaking from a musical composition standpoint, but I think it is an incredibly smartly written project. The way it incorporates numerous conflicting sentiments in a way where they feel deeply unified is worthy of note - from a 'silly' song like "Another Postcard," to the hesitantly optimistic track "Next Time," to "War on ... read more

bbno$ - bag or die
82

A super fun and consistent release from bbno$. Really great bars throughout keep you entertained, and the beats are damn boppy. My favorite tracks are "bag or die," "chipotle," "piccolo," and "mathematics."

Grimes - Art Angels
53

I am sadly underwhelmed by this. "Kill V. Maim," "Venus Fly," and "Butterfly" are really good tracks that absolutely go hard as hell but I found the rest of the project didn't grab my interest like I expected.

This album is so strong. It has bangers, it has beautiful moments, it takes risks, and they pay off. It has fantastic lyrics, and the delivery of them is even more so. It moves through different speeds and sounds quickly and seamlessly. Just amazing work.

Cornelia Jakobs - Hold Me Closer
95

This track is outstanding. You get the story head-on, and the vocal performance is incredibly moving and impactful. Even if you don't personally relate to the words in the slightest, you still feel them. This song is seared onto my mind forever.

Mahmood - Brividi
NR

I still have no idea what to think of this one. I think it's good but I also can't really take it seriously. Like, when I think about it I laugh, and I'm not supposed to, but I just think it's funny. But it's a pretty good song and I like yelling it in my car.

Emma Muscat - I Am What I Am
10

The most generic and dull "empowerment" Eurovision song that could ever be devised. This literally sounds like it was produced after feeding an AI hundreds of hours of corporate LGBT pride and body positivity ads. It isn't even technically bad or anything, it just has no character at all. A song called "I Am What I Am" should say something about the person performing it and this tells us nothing, possibly even less than nothing. It's painful

The Rasmus - Jezebel
25

I hate the lyrics and I don't like the singer's vocals at all. The instrumental is pretty okay though

Marina Satti - YENNA
75

An extremely well-made and unique album. Traditional Greek sound blends harmoniously with modern influences, the hauntingly beautiful vocal performance of Marina Satti uniting both. The songs that stood out most for me were "SPIRTO KE VENZINI" and "NANI," but I think the vibe of the entire album is quite nice and should be experienced as a full work.

77

Overall this is a great album. Composition wise, it bounces a bit between the conventional and the very unique, but overall has a very fluid and continuous sound. "disco tits" is my absolute favorite off this album, and I also really like "shedontknowbutsheknows," "stranger," "cycles," and "hey you got drugs?" A solid album with absolute gems.

MARO - saudade, saudade (live in studio)
90

I ADORE "saudade, saudade." It's such a tragic song, but is uplifting at the same time thanks to the immaculate backing vocals. Very beautiful. I also think that, for the Portuguese, this is a much more successful entry when it comes to having English lyrics than their previous one. It still has a strong, classically Portuguese identity, but is able to be understood by a wider audience by being bilingual. Amazing entry

Monika LIU - Sentimentai
90

Very rarely do I EVER see a performer absolutely and completely embody a song with their performance of it as Monika does with "Sentimentai." This soulful, mysterious, elegant, unique, and yes, sentimental song is already a classic in my eyes and will simply age like wine in the years to come.

Tove Lo - Dirt Femme
90

I feel like this album bonked me over the head with a rubber mallet with how GOOD it is. It accomplishes what every strong album must do: every song on this album has its own unique and memorable elements while embracing a common theme or sound. I also feel that, while most LPs, Dirt Femme included, have the clear "standouts" that are the obvious singles of the album, none of the songs feel like they're just there for filling the album out - each of them are their own part of the ... read more

Achille Lauro - LAURO - Achille Idol Superstar
46

This album is... alright. At its best, it's fine, and at its worst, it's mediocre. Overall, it has a barebones, underproduced sound to it, which does work at some points, but I think a lot of tracks could've used further development and polish. Songs like "COME ME," "A UN PASSO DA DIO," and "GENERAZIONE X" feel repetitive and empty, while tracks like "FIORI ROSA" finish strong, but are pretty boring in the first half.
There are a few tracks that stuck ... read more

Achille Lauro - STRIPPER
70

While it is far from being high quality from a lyrical or musical standpoint, "Stripper" is a single I enjoy nonetheless. Lauro performed the hell out of this at the Eurovision semifinal and it was pure CAMP. Sometimes that sort of mindless fun and unapologetic showmanship is exactly what the world needs.

Def Leppard - Hysteria
72

"Hysteria" is certainly an iconic 80s rock album and deserves to be considered as such. It's as simple as that. I felt like listening to this didn't really offer me anything unique or special though, probably due to tracks like "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Armageddon It," and "Hysteria" being played heavily on classic rock radio stations. Maybe I just don't have the same appreciation for this style that others do, but I felt like this was a "heard one ... read more
