Jim Legxacy - black british music (2025)
80

This mixtape has gotten me really excited to hear an eventual Jim Legxacy album.

The first full song on here, 'stick,' is nothing short of a masterpiece. The pitched up chorus is irresistible and buried into my brain. Then there is the incredible beat and Jim Legxacy sounds absolutely fantastic on it, I also like a lot of the lyrics here (e.g. "Sellin' Charli to the brats"). A really impressive beginning.

'new david bowie' is great, I really like the beat ... read more

underscores - U
80

A major highlight when it comes to new albums I've heard in 2026.

'Tell Me (U Want It)' is a good intro with a cool pre-chorus into chorus, as well as a great bridge. 'Music' is one of my favourite songs here, the production on this track is absolutely insane. The stuttering beat, the chorus which feels like a rush of joy, the build and drop towards the end of the track makes this song a really exciting listen. Additionally, I love the lyrics here. I love the guitar ... read more

Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
80

I've decided to revisit the first album that pushed me towards music as a teenager, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, even with my much expanded taste.

I think the first full song on here, 'bad guy,' is actually a great song. I love the beat and how well the vocals match the production and lyrics. The "duh" is iconic to me and I love the breakdown at the end of the song. I'm also a fan of the song 'xanny.' I think the production is great and ... read more

James Blake - Trying Times
80

A great record with a bunch of perfectly implemented samples.

'Walk Out Music' makes for a decent enough opener even if it is far from my favourite track here. I much prefer the following song, 'Death of Love.' This song has great lyrics and production, including a great sample. Jame Blake's voice here is great; which is constant throughout the album. 'I Had a Dream She Took My Hand' is one of my favourite song here. There is another incredible sample with ... read more

EsDeeKid - Rebel
90

I genuinely think this is an incredible debut project.

'4 Raws' is the perfect opener. It has one of my favourite beats here and EsDeeKid sounds so charismatic on the song. His accent on this mixtape I think makes him significantly more interesting as an artist. I also adore 'Cali Man,' the spacey production reminds me of Metroid. EsDeeKid has so many great hooks and this song is no exception. Rico Ace's verse is also great. This song transitions perfectly into ... read more

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
70

An album with great hits yet occasionally underwhelming deep cuts.

'Feminonmenon' is a great opener with interesting production. It also showcases Chappell Roan's great voice, which can also be seen on the following 'Red Wine Supernova.' This is one of my favourite songs on the album with fantastic production and an epic bridge. I also really like 'After Midnight,' the chorus is irresistible.

However, I'm not that big into 'Coffee.' I think ... read more

Sexyy Red - In Sexyy We Trust
60

It is far from a masterpiece, but this mixtape is still a decent time if you don't take it too seriously.

The first full song here is 'She's Back' which I think is a great song. The beat bangs and Sexyy sounds great. I really like the line where she says "Ho thought she was cute, you look a mess, bitch, you need to stop." I'm not the biggest fan of 'Boss Me Up,' the chorus sounds like a worse version of 'Girls in the Hood' by Megan Thee ... read more

The Scythe - Strictly 4 The Scythe
60

This mixtape should be nothing but fireworks, but I am left somewhat underwhelmed.

'THE SCYTHE' is a great opener. The gang chorus goes hard, the beat is great and everyone sounds incredible on the song, although I have to shout out TiaCorine especially. However, I think the quality dips with 'LIT EFFECT.' I think the chorus on this track is decent enough but LAZER DIM 700's verse is boring and Denzel Curry has much better verses elsewhere. 'PHONY' is a cool ... read more

Björk - Vulnicura
80

A dark and devastating record.

The opener, 'Stonemilker,' is absolutely incredible. It sets up the narrative of the album so well, I love the lyrics. As always, Björk's singing is next level, and on this song in particular she sounds absolutely heartbroken. 'Lionsong' is another major highlight for me, the strings and beat work together so well. The production on 'History Of Touches' is some of my favourite here as well. The song sounds so loving and ... read more

Beyoncé - 4
60

Whilst not great, this album in many ways feels like a turning point in Beyoncé's career.

The version of the album I listened to (I don't know why so many of her early records have versions with different tracklists) opened with 'Love On Top.' This song is excellent, the instrumental is great and the vocals work immaculately to create such a positive vibe. Kanye West's and André 3000's contributions to 'Party' are decent even if this song ... read more

Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
80

I am always impressed by the feature lists Gorillaz manages to pull together for their albums.

'Strange Timez' is a great opener with cool production that matches the title of the song well, I especially love when it fully kicks in for the second chorus. Robert Smith works surprisingly well on this song. Beck sounds fantastic on 'The Valley of The Pagans,' the chorus and refrain are absolute flames. The production on this song is also spectacular. 'The Lost Chord' ... read more

Justice - Hyperdrama
60

A decent record even if it lives in the shadow of Justice's debut.

'Neverender' is a good opener to the album. Tame Impala's vocals suits this song well and the production is solid. Next, we get 'Generator.' This is by miles the best song on the album for me, it is an absolute banger and one of my favourite songs of all time. The production hits so hard on this song and the strings that get introduced only elevate the song. In contrast, I find the production to be ... read more

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb
60

A fairly decent record, even if I was disappointed due to how much I enjoyed some of the non-album 2024 singles.

'ORDER OF PROTECTION' is a decent opener, although there isn't much to make me want to come back. I feel the same way about a lot of the songs on the album. I really like the beat on 'HELICOPTER' even if I'm not a massive fan of the chorus. On the other hand, 'STOLE YA FLOW' has a really catchy chorus where A$AP sounds great. This partnered ... read more

Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
90

A stellar record that captures a late summer vibe so well.

'Norman fucking Rockwell' is an incredible opener, especially with the first two lines being "Goddamn, man-child / You fucked me so good that I almost said "I love you"." The production is fantastic with great pianos and strings which are consistent throughout the album. Lana's singing is also fantastic. I think 'Mariners Apartment Complex' is a major highlight as well, this song has one of ... read more

Charli xcx - Wuthering Heights
60

An underwhelming Charli xcx album but a fairly decent soundtrack album.

'House' is by far the best song here. I love how eerie the violin on the track is and John Cale's spoken word is incredible, I think it's so cool he was down to work with Charli. Charli's vocals are introduced so well, marrying perfectly with Cale's. The distortion on their voices towards the end of the track is mindblowing, they sound so tortured. Furthermore, I feel like this song by far has ... read more

Kanye West - ye
70

Whilst far from my favourite, I think this is one of Kanye's most intriguing albums.

The opening spoken word on 'I Thought About Killing You' is very interesting to me, even if I'm not a big fan of the backing production. I think the switch up at the end is alright. I love the verses on 'Yikes,' the production and Kanye's rapping is great. The way the chorus is built upon at the end is good.

'All Mine' is an absolute banger to me. I adore the ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
90

This album is definitive proof that the excellence of Black Country, New Road can continue without Isaac.

'Besties' is a great opener to the album with endearing lyrics, my favourite of which being "I'm a walking TikTok trend." I find 'The Big Spin' to be just ok but 'Socks' has recently grown on me quite a lot. I love when the drums kick in especially.

I adore the instrumentation on 'Salem Sisters' and the way the different vocalists ... read more

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet
60

There are some standout tracks on this album, but I feel as if it falls short of being something great.

The record certainly starts strong, the chorus of 'Taste' slaps and 'Please Please Please' is great, just like everyone else I love the key change. Skipping ahead in the tracklist, 'Espresso' easily makes for the best song here in my opinion. The chorus is very catchy, I love the production and the "Switch it up like Nintendo" lyric in ... read more

Beyoncé - Lemonade
90

Beyoncé really made lemonade with the lemons she was given in the form of this album.

'Pray You Catch Me' is a cinematic opener that begins a strong narrative throughout the record. I really like 'Hold Up,' it is well produced and I like the lyrics of the track, especially on the refrain. The angrier turn on 'Don't Hurt Yourself' goes over really well and is well justified in the context of Jay-Z cheating on her.

'Sorry' is one of my ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
80

I know this is a cliché phrase, but 'Chromakopia' is Tyler's most personal album to date.

The album begins strong with 'St. Chroma,' Daniel Caesar sounds great on the track and the beat drop hits hard. 'Rah Tah Tah' is one of the biggest bangers on the album with a killer beat and vocal performance.

From here, we hit a portion of the record that I find to just be alright. I like the production and chorus of 'Darling, I' but the verses do ... read more
