One of the greatest albums of all time. The Cure’s classic post-punk sound reaches new heights, with an emphasis on the ethereal dream-pop like production and gloomy songwriting making for one of the most depressing and chilling albums ever made.
Nearly perfect, some parts dragged on a bit. Super ambitious, as are all Swans albums, but easily digestible to where I was able to enjoy this several years ago without having really any experience with experimental rock. Swans kick ass
The Killers if they were way darker. The music is fantastic, lyrics are great, and even though it’s super depressing there is a hopeful and bright feeling I get from this album, especially by the end. The atmosphere created is more ambient and creepy than its post-punk influences, but equally passionate and beautiful. Awesome album
Used to not like Rage. I thought rapping over metal instrumentals was annoying and pretentious, and they sounded like a bunch of whiny teenagers. After giving this album a few more listens, I really get it now. Tom Morello obviously rocks but the lyrics are so fucking real. These guys have every right to be whiny lmao
Even if I don’t know wtf they’re saying the music is super beautiful, builds a gloomy and dream-like atmosphere that’s almost hypnotic. No standout tracks imo, but I like them all
Not super consistent but the best tracks ended up being some of the biggest hits of the decade.
Super underrated follow up to the Trilogy. It had almost everything that made his original mixtapes great while reflecting on his newfound fame, resulting in some of my favorite tracks from his discography (Professional, Adaptation, Belong to the World). This album creates such a gorgeous atmosphere that blew me away as a teenager. However, it’s not quite as consistent as HoB, so I can’t score it as high
A new high for house music, deeply twisted and almost frightening songwriting combined with lush instrumentals and incredible vocal performances firmly established The Weeknd’s sound, as well as his place in pop music before he would become the biggest artist in the world.
More dreamy and ethereal than the way my bloody valentine approached shoegaze/dream-pop, but just as incredible if not more so. Simply one of the most beautiful listening experiences of my life.
Best tracks: Alison, Machine Gun, 40 Days, Souvlaki Space Station, When the Sun Hits, Melon Yellow
So much emotion on every second of this album… 65 minutes of pure passion and killer tracks. Very ambitious for a punk/new wave album too. Songwriting is spectacular, and the sound is so much more refined than early punk efforts from the Ramones or Sex Pistols or their own debut. Just a near perfect ‘70s rock album through and through. Favorite tracks: London Calling, Brand New Cadillac, Jimmy Jazz, Spanish Bombs, Guns of Brixton, Lover’s Rock, I’m Not Down, Train in ... read more
Gonna have to revisit this one… never been a huge fan of The Smiths tbh
Shoegaze classic. I think Slowdive’s Souvlaki is superior but this album revolutionized the genre and nearly every song is a banger. Touched is a skip, Only Shallow is the best track
I wanted to listen to an album so objectively terrible that even their own fans can’t find any excuses for it, and JFC it did not disappoint in that regard. I cannot believe this is the same band that did London Calling or Should I Stay Or Should I Go, and was once hailed and the only band that mattered. What a fall from grace.
Honestly I don’t care too much if it’s not creative or inventive, they kinda rock. Can’t give a high score because of the creative bankruptcy but I still go back to some of these songs every now and then
Long Season is indeed probably the greatest track ever performed live. The rest of the album lives sets up that finale superbly well.
Holy Fucking Shit is right. I’d give this album a 200 if I could. Whatever genre this would even fall under - Shoegaze-Industrial-Post-Punk or something - is so peak. This album being made by just a couple of regular dudes makes it 10x better IMO
