Things Sara Evans did: that.
Love the way she's channeling 70's rock through her twang. it's a rich tapestry of songs she chose to cover, with some great harmonies. The highlight is the blissful cover of The Pretenders "Don't Get Me Wrong".
Look, it's a bit dense and self-indulgent, but I will follow Sufjan down whatever rabbit hole he wants to take me. I love the sonics. It's thick and threatening and very electronic. I prefer orchestral Sufjan on principle, but have no qualms with noise pop Sufjan. I'm ascending.
Mama said, let me re-invent disco real quick, hold my glass of chablis.
It’s her best album since The Fame Monster. Bonus points for the Chromatica II/911 transition. That’s some galaxy brian shit. There are some skips (Free Woman, Replay, Babylon) but the bops (Rain On Me, Enigma, 1,000 Doves) mostly outweigh.
Underrated album! Jewel experimenting with pop music reared some interesting results. "Leave The Lights On" is one of my favorite songs of hers. "Haunted" is epic. And then there are these manic sex anthems "Yes U Can" and "U + Me = Love" that are so perfectly deranged and fun. Some of it is campy, but that gets some people off!
Just a fucking perfect and brilliant album. It's a cry for help, but it's also a painfully exquisite release of pain. Love has never been more potent.
This is one of my favorite albums of all-time. It is the perfect folk-pop album, with great guest collaborators and a perfectly peppy nostalgic sound. "Ladies Choice" is the best song of the bunch, co-written by Rachel Yamagata. And the closer "Gardenia" is a classic, so intimate and raw. This was a bold step forward for Mandy Moore.
This really is her operating at her most powerful and focused. It's a perfect folk-pop-rock-jazz fusion with too many classic songs to name. The last song "Twisted" is a silly jazz standard, but still worth sticking around for,. "Peoples Parties/Same Situation" is the greatest one-two punch in all of music. Just devastatingly beautiful.
Such a quintessential album of hers, and one where she really pushed her sound to new limits. "Amelia" is a beautiful centerpiece, but "Song For Sharon" and "Blue Motel Room" are personal favorites.
It's not a perfect album, but he really snapped and gave the people what they wanted.
