Mixed bag. Next Semester is a really great song. Overcompensate, Backslide, Routines, and Midwest Indigo have awesome production. The rest is a lot of tøp flavored filler tbh. Their mission statement remains impactful, but this album just felt like it was holding back a lot of the time.
I never listen to this album. I played it a few times when it came out, and I understand it’s place in the lore, and why it sounds how it does. I just don’t fucking like it 🤷
This is the band reaching heights not previously seen in their career. This is when they stopped being taken for joke by internet music critics. Larger, conceptual, and layered. This is their best record by a long shot, due to the ideas conceptually, and sonically being executed with a noticeable level of care, and maturity.
This record is the buffering period between the charm, and cheese on vessel, and their most fleshed out, textured, and mature release Trench. Another album I hold a lot of nostalgia for, but I quickly aged out of it. This is their most blatantly top 40 sounding record. Tear in my heart is a great song though lol
Corny, sincere, catchy, and extremely dated. I’m nostalgic about this record. It has a level of boyish charm that puts a smile on my face. Songs like guns for hands, and holding on to you are genuine stand outs in their early catalog. There’s a lot of cheese on this project, but it’s not offensive as it feels genuine and honest. This feels like the start of the twenty one pilots project as we know it today.
demo mixtape. Amateurish, gross on the ears at multiple points, but glimpses into the future with guns for hands, and a couple other Vessel tracks keep it from being completely irredeemable. The sound is so incomplete, that this project isn’t even eligible for rating imo.
