Decent album, I'd say it's definitely stronger on the first half. The production on this album does honestly stand out to me more than The Forever Story. The first half has some cool beats with pretty cool rapping performances, but nothing crazy. In the 2nd half JID branches out a bit more trying songs that honestly don't even feel like hip-hop. While these attempts at branching out aren't bad at all, they don't really interest me. Some songs also do feel like they drag ... read more
I don’t know if I'd say I'm disappointed with this album, but it’s extremely mediocre. While it is a step up from most of Kanye's work in the past two years, this tracklist doesn't do very much for me. Every now and then you get a song that has decent potential, yet still feels unfinished whether due to bad vocal mixing, unfinished sounding production or just an unpassionate Kanye performance. Overall while this album isn't bad, the fact that this is all ... read more
I wasn't very sure of my expectations coming into this, but I'm somewhat disappointed. While the album starts on a pretty strong note with some nice, chill production and some strong rapping performances, towards the 2nd half of the tracklist the quality dip is pretty significant. The entire backend is made up of very short 2-2.5 minute long songs, which feel like they significantly lack content. From these songs, all you get is a single verse with production that doesn't get ... read more
Doing this as my first Pre-Flower Boy Tyler album, this was pleasantly different. The production on this album (specifically on the first half) is unlike anything I've heard from Tyler. While a lot of songs in the first half are really cool and experimental, the tracklist does fall off in the 2nd half, with less risk-taking production and unnecessarily long songs. 2SEATER, FUCKING YOUNG / PERFECT & OKAGA, CA are just not worthy of being almost 7 minutes long, and due to them all being ... read more
[ALBUM #100] Unexpectedly but pleasantly relaxing album. While this album does have some great highlights, it has a concerningly inconsistent tracklist quality. The rapping on this album is average when it comes to Jay. I wouldn't say his flows or lyricism stick out to me on a majority of the tracklist, but the rapping is still good and when combined with relaxing instrumentals it works well. The lows and highs of this album can both be derived from the production. The production on the ... read more
This is a great and very appropriate sequel to Alfredo, following the signature style of calm and relaxing songs. In terms of production, in comparison to Alfredo I'd say The Alchemist is just as good as he was 5 years ago. Some of the songs on here do feel a bit repetitive production wise and less risk-taking, problems which Alfredo's production didn't really have, but this album still has amazing calm/lofi instrumentals. Rapping wise Freddie Gibbs's flows are slightly less ... read more
I'm really disappointed here. This album is just extremely overbloated, any songs that may have cool details are mostly drowned out by the 2 hours of majority sleep. I can somewhat respect the album as it is definitely more of an “album for the true fans”, but it's just not for me. The production rarely made me feel anything, and I don't care enough about J. Cole to appreciate the lyrical value here.
To say I didn't expect this album to be this good would be an understatement. The tracklist here has great progression, starting off very chill and somewhat turning into more of an energetic experience near the middle, before turning chill again near the end of the tracklist. J. Cole is an amazing rapper, while his flows don't necessarily blow me away, his writing is actually really cool here. The storytelling on A Tale Of 2 Citiez is really awesome, I love how he uses the same chorus ... read more
Coming after an 8 year wait, this is pretty pathetic. In terms of production, this album overall just feels weaker than any other Rocky project. There are a couple tracks with interesting production like "STFU" with its experimental feel and "ROBBERY" with its jazzy vibe, however a majority of the instrumentals on here just feel like they lack the depth and change that Rocky has brought in the past and feel more just like the same boring rhythm on repeat for the whole song. ... read more
Not at all what i expected from this album, i expected a pretty energetic album but what i got was honestly better. Freddie's rapping is very talented however i wouldn't say its what makes the album stands out. I think The Alchemist's calm lo-fi production on most songs here is really cool. It makes for a really awesome chill background music vibe, but not in a boring way.
While sure this is disappointing coming from Utopia, I don't know why people are acting like this album is the worst thing they've ever heard. While I don't feel like I'm going to come back to almost any of this, I don't think I had many "wtf am i listening to" moments. This album just kind of feels like generic music you would hear at a party, rather than anything you'd want to listen to casually. While almost the entire album is just mid songs, the ... read more
It's good, but far too short to get much out of it. While no songs were bad, there aren't good enough highlights to really excuse the length of the album. Rather than feeling intentionally short, it feels more "couldn't be bothered to finish". Not a bad album, has good songs, just hardly feels like an album. Also, Highest in the room remix just straight up had zero reason to even be on here.
It's a good album but overrated to be honest. While the verses and rapping were of course great, I feel like too much of the album's efforts were put into the rapping and aside from a few songs, I don't really get much out of the production. I also don't like how none of the hooks really stick on the album. ESPECIALLY Pharrell. I don't like Pharrell's hooks on this album; they feel really weird and out of place. Overall a good album, but totally not my thing. Much ... read more
Underrated album actually. While some of the hooks and verses on here aren't as great as Rodeo, the production definitely holds up especially in the first half. While the album definitely doesn't have nearly as strong highlights as Rodeo and maybe not even astroworld and utopia, there weren't any songs where I felt like "this is just kinda boring", which makes me think it's slightly better than them.
I wasn't fully sure at all what to expect coming into this album, just the idea that Danny was in a really horrible mental state when making this and it definitely shows. The production on this album is like nothing I've heard before, even from the Danny Brown-jpegmafia experimental scene. It feels so perfectly slow and druggy on the slow songs and so perfectly chaotic and tragic on the intense songs, which perfectly represents the album and Danny's mental state at the time. ... read more
Pretty strange album as expected from Danny Brown, i think while not as experimental as something like STH, this album has quite a strong suit in its production. Danny tries a pretty unique style of production (compared to what I've heard from him) and tries an almost hyper-poppy style. While i wouldn't say Danny has any outstanding vocal performances on the album, the features are a very fun aspect of the album and do a lot of heavy lifting especially on a song like Copycats
This album isn't really my kind of thing. While I can kind of understand why some people like it, to me the production on this album is extremely bland for a strong majority of its run time. Another issue I have is the length, for some reason Drake dragged the album out to almost an hour and 10 minutes, which would be fine if half the tracklist wasn't boring bloat. The album would be a lot worse to me if it didn't have standouts such as 6PM In New York and Company.
Pretty mediocre album. While the vocals on the album are fine and would probably be good rap verses, the instrumentals are where the album seriously lacks. Almost every beat on this album feels super lackluster, some songs feel like they hardly even have a melody. Truly just good verses and a stacked feature list gone to waste, the beats just feel completely flavourless and tasteless. And while this review is pretty negative, it's not like the album is bad, its FINE but its wasted ... read more
EXTREMELY over bloated album. While this album does have some good ideas, the album is a huge mess and is really over bloated and far too long. This album feels like a posthumous album for Kanye, almost like a bunch of scraps thrown together. I don't care for almost every song here because they are all just very unfinished.
