I honestly forgot that this came out this year, which feels like a review of itself.
Feels like a riskier and sexier version of the early days of Cage the Elephant. There are some slow moments on this album and a couple of songs that feel more like filler than substance, but this is still a thousand times more interesting than some of the biggest pop/rock albums of the year. DJO has a particular charm that I haven't seen in a while.
The character and vocals of Jim Morrison are without a doubt what makes this album this relevant and beloved almost sixty years after its release. But this album would also be nothing without Manzarek's work on keys- some of the most iconic intros in rock and roll are found throughout this debut, and I can close my eyes while listening to Manzarek play and just see images of the 1960's, Los Angeles and San Francisco. To clarify- I enjoyed this a lot more than some Charli XCX projects, whom Pinkpantheress is inevitably always compared to. This just felt like a very stereotypical hyperpop album to me- I was excited when I saw she would be sampling from artists like Panic! This one of the only albums that I consider to be pretty much flawless. "Movin' Out", "Vienna", "Only the Good Die Young" AND "She's Always a Woman" all being on an album with only nine tracks is incredible. This is practically a greatest hits album. The Stranger is definitely a quality over quality type project and never feels weighed down with unnecessary filler or songs clearly included to bolster the runtime.
