Mostly Mpondo music, but I was surprised to hear languages and music from north of Limpopo as well. Could have been richer, but decent.
We need more alternative albums from southern Africa, and especially more Art Pop. Mpho Sebina's effort is commendable.
This is perhaps too generous given how simple the album sounds, but I was pleasantly surprised. The albums sounds like Dream Pop supplemented by Afro-Pop and Contemporary R&B, which is a new direction from her Contemporary R&B sound. I found it refreshing (in part given the current landscape of the South African industry) and thought it sounds good on her.
I wish the fourth track was stronger or outstanding so I could give this a 95, but it carries over too many motifs from the previous track. Nonetheless, this body of work generally exemplifies everything I love about jazz: Different rhythms, melodies, sounds and tones, tempos, etc. engaging crazily in a way that can fully arrest and captivate your brain towards intended moods and atmospheres.
