The pairing of Aurora and Tom makes so much sense to me, You can really feel the fun they had creating this, everything sounds very intentional and realised. Every track has amazing sound design and selection that pairs well with Aurora's stylish vocals. I particularly like how 'in your face' RING THE ALARM is, something that really grew on me after multiple listens.
Criminally underrated, clearly so many influences that have been channelled into some really expertly polished, coherent tracks with great mixes and masters. An interesting Electronic/hyperpop take on hip hop with lots of ear candy and fun effects. I love how well this collective's voices mix together throughout, constantly keeping things fresh.
A display of why Goldie and Submotive have been so influential, combining the best of those older DnB sounds with a modern edge and polish. I thought the album version of 'still the same' was underwhelming though, it's stretched structure didn't make sense to me. 'Secret Handshake' is a great example of the Project's hard drops and brooding atmosphere. Hearing the extent of some of the subs live at Joshua Brooke's was absolutely ridiculous.
Not as innovative or unique as their previous projects, lots of recycled ideas and an over abundance of boring 808 centred trap beats for an ‘alternative’ album. A couple of enjoyable tracks but I felt like they removed what was interesting about them to try and appeal to a wider audience.
Theatrically dark songwriting and twisted beats that are packed with ear candy and sound fx, all mixed in a satisfying way that makes me frequently revisit and discover elements I didn’t notice previously. Catchy but extremely stylised. I find the exaggerated mysterious tone they set is so entertaining and fun to listen to. The music videos are great too. Would’ve liked to see an extra track or two.
Some nice ideas and sounds dotted throughout, nothing extremely inspiring though. ‘Escape’ and ‘Jasper’s Song’ were high notes for me. There wasn’t really a narrative and unpleasant clipping was present in some tracks. Overall an adequate album from Flume, just didn’t quite fulfil its potential.
Close to perfection. I absolutely adore what Pink has done with UK dance music, sampling and moulding it in a way that best suites her, whilst still maintaining a unique sound. Definitely comes across as a 'bedroom producer' album in the most charming and sincere way possible. I disagree with her views on B-sections as my only gripe with the album is that some tracks are too short to fully soak in. Overall an amazing album that delivers innocent and catchy tunes without any filler.
I feel a bit conflicted about this project, there are some really beautiful moments throughout where the vocals really connect with the instrumentals, but I also feel there are moments where the production goes off on a tangent and the 'glitchiness' feels unmotivated. A lot of the tracks sound like Flume remixes of Emma's tracks to me. I do like the 'cold' atmosphere they have created together.
A stylised and intricate debut album, featuring elegant vocal performances and melancholic yet hard hitting beats. His influences are very clear yet I think you can really tell IMANU apart with his very particular harmonic choices and sound design. Would’ve been nice to see a bit more of his D’n’B side and slightly less flume style tracks but I really enjoyed how collaborative yet coherent it was.
