Post Malone - Stoney
20

Congratulations is a good track.
White Iverson isn't that good, but get's a pass for showing potential.
The rest sucks.

When listening to Stoney, it feels like every song is so soulless, that you're left begging for the next song to be more interesting.
It just drags on so much.

Not gunna lie, back in 2016, when I had a sad boi moment, I'd play 'I Fall Apart' from time to time, but looking back, man, that song is pure trash, garbage ready to be eaten by rats.

Congratulations is my only ... read more

This might be one of the best debut albums of any rock band, of all time.

Rage Against The Machine, rage against 'the machine' with brilliantly-timed drums, heavy bass, insanely clever Tom Morello guitar riffs and tricks, lyrics strong in (political) opinion, raging vocals, and a sound so epic, many eardrums have leaked white fluids that aren't supposed to depart from that particular part of your body.
One. Big. Eargasm.

I could go on and on about the things which make this record so ... read more

Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City
88

I could not get enough of Vampire Weeekend back in 2013. Now, they've just released the 2019 record "Father of the Bride", and I felt the sudden urge to revisit Modern Vampires of the City. So glad that I did.

Before I say anything else, it has to be mentioned how perfectly the aesthetic of the album and the album art go together. The album feels like you're walking through cloudy New York with everything around you in black and white, and moving in slow motion.

I was going to ... read more

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
72

Get Lucky was THE radio tune of 2013, and rightly so.
The album holds up to the standard set by the single as well.

Daft Punk is just one of those artists who has a knack for creating something funky no matter the genre they walk in to. RAM proves that, as the French duo goes full electronic funk.

The two longest tracks have a difficult time keeping my engaged for 8 to 9 minutes, but are still very good tracks, meant for closer listen. The lows on this album, aren't very low, but the highs ... read more

Slauson Malone 1 - A Quiet Farwell, 2016-2018
69

Somehow, this sound collage of genre-blending with an underground hip hop core manages to sound very cohesive.
The first three listens will have you confused, but that fourth listen will make it all click.

Yes, it takes four listens for it to find a place in your life. Have fun.

The Voidz - Tyranny
83

An album so dense it has aeroplane cabins all over the world being jealous.

What's better than an artist pioneering and influencing a whole genre, and then, thirteen years later, releasing an album further experimenting that sound to great result. Julian Casablancas is one of the masterminds of the 21st century.

Tyranny has everything that I want from an experimental alt rock album in the 2010s. It's noisy, psychedelic, interesting, strong in opinion, a lot of fun and super dense. The album ... read more

KIDS SEE GHOSTS - KIDS SEE GHOSTS
74

I'll keep it short.
KIDS SEE GHOSTS came unexpected.
Damn did it come unexpected.

Suddenly, Kid Cudi sounds better than ever before, and Kanye West has definitely improved in the studio as well.
This album is psychedelic at heart, and speaking of heart, it dives deep into the hearts of these two artists.
Well-produced, interesting, but at times just a little too 'meh'.

Favourite tracks: 4th Dimension, Kids See Ghosts, Cudi Montage.
Least favourites: Feel the Love, Freeee.

Joji - BALLADS 1
70

It's still early days in Joji's music career after moving over from YouTube, but his progress seems to be consistent in terms quality.

Ballads 1 has proved to Joji can make great music, especially with a beautiful single like 'SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK'.
The aesthetic he's going for seems to finally have some effect on the quality of music.

Ballads 1 is very re-playable and seems to get better with every listen. Previously, "Will He" was Joji's best song by far, but now I can ... read more

dodie - Human
40

Dodie Clark's 2019 EP Human is a simplistic folk pop effort, but worth the effort for sure.

Dodie seems to be on a little journey to expand her sound, to implement some more influences and to experiment with some electronics. However, in the past, it was the simplicity and raw personal story aspect which made it worthwhile and listenable.
The song 'Monster' is Dodie's attempt to branch out falling flat on its face. The whole of that track sounds like a glorified DIY tutorial.

Her voice ... read more

Gorillaz - Humanz
73

Gorillaz' fifth studio release suffers from 'inconsistent mix disease'.
Every now and again, the mix is near-perfect, but skip twenty seconds ahead, and somehow you'll find the mixing to suddenly be a bit off.

It seems that this album is more of a tribute to the Gorillaz world, rather than expanding the story of it all. This is represented in the use of the guest artists, which has been criticised by many people. However, I feel that some of the criticism is a bit misplaced. In the end, I do ... read more

Jaden - SYRE
15

Jaden Smith compares himself to Elvis Presley on a record which would justify calling himself the next Lil' Tay instead.

There is only a single positive on this album, and that consolation prize goes to the intro track(s): BLUE. A decent opener with some truly great sections to it.
"The Passion" is also passable.

Other than that... Well, I'm not even going to waste my time naming ALL of the negatives.

Favourite tracks: B, L, U, E.
Honourable mention: The Passion.
Least ... read more

twenty one pilots - Trench
72

Trench is clever, well-produced, interesting lyrically, Twenty One Pilots' first somewhat great record, and by far their most mature. However, I still struggle to get behind Tyler Joseph's vocal performance most of the time, with a few exceptions (e.g. the 'bishops' line on Nico and the Niners). This album is a step in the right direction for sure, especially if you compare it to their last record 'Blurryface'.

My main struggle with Trench is that the emotional aspect just doesn't click for ... read more

My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys
35

Danger Days is My Chemical Romance's most flawed released.
Let's start at the positives though.

The theme of this album is a lot of fun. The video clips show you the world in which this album exits and the summer vibes it gives off.
The story is further expanded on with these 'interludes' narrated by Steve Righ. Personally, I am a fan of these narrated interludes, I'm a fan of interludes in general.
To be fair, Dangers Days is a lot fun. The times where the instrumentation and the theme ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino
87

Number six in the Arctic Monkeys discography is a dreamy space pop, glam rock, lounge music-kind of experience.
Alex Turner's Bowie-inspired vocals lead the theme by almost narrating over a palette of carefully picked instruments.
Never too much, never too little.

It is obvious that Arctic Monkeys have moved on from the alternative rock sound, which made them the band they are today.
The first line on Tranquillity Base states: "I just wanted to be one of the Strokes."
I can hear ... read more

My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
92

Look, this album is a classic and no less than any other classics. In fact, it outdoes many other 'classics'.

A brilliant and very emotional vocal performance by Gerard Way.
Extremely and touching lyrics, almost destined to form tears in your eyes.
A consistent and clever aesthetic.
Insanely amazing instrumental climaxes used at the right time, with the right effects, lasting the right amount of time.
A web of magnificent writing putting all other mid-2000s pop punk to shame.
Somehow ... read more

Post Malone - beerbongs & bentleys
68

This sophomore record by Post Malone is really well-produced, which makes the highs exactly that, very high. Those highs come when Posty's lyrics are great and the song has something extra going for it. However, the many lows on Beerbongs are awfully mediocre and super uninteresting.
