Spoon - A Series of Sneaks

This is kinda transitional from the heavy Pixies influenced with a touch of Pavement's slacker attitude of the nineties to a more personal sound that will turn them into one of the top 2000s indie bands. You can hear 100% Spoon moments in the amazing "30 Gallon Tank" and "Metal Detektor", plus here and there they're already using the studio and the mix in a creative way. Still not fully focused but a good one and a good second start.

Spoon - Telephono

They really liked The Pixies, didn't they? A lot of energy and style from day one, but the influence is so huge that you can't ignore it.

Horsegirl - Phonetics On and On

Does someone here likes The Velvet Underground by any chance?

Andy Bell - pinball wanderer

music for sleeping madchester style

Coldplay - X&Y

Wow, this is boring. Coldplay enter their wannabe-mid-U2 phase and they achieve the result with this collection of fillers I can't remember anything about. The first and the last songs are the most interesting ones but everything in between is just nothing. Anyway, I've read the band is also still not happy with this record, so I guess the value of it is clear to everyone.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head

It starts very good. Some of these are the finest example of how Chris Martin's voice can be haunting in the best way possible, so Politik, God Put A Smile... and Daylight, go directly in the list of their best songs. In My Place is the obligatory classic that I have to admit still works very good. And I can stand The Scientist as long as I don't have to listen to it a thousand times a day, like it happened in the old days. But the rest is honestly too mid to live up to Parachutes. ... read more

Coldplay - Parachutes

It will forever be a mystery to me how a band that wrote such a magnificent song like Shiver can become such an annoying shit and forget how to write tunes that are at least decent. That's basically why I'm starting re-discovering Coldplay's discography. When this came out it was a bang. Sure the influence from Radiohead and Travis was clear, but almost everything sounds so inspired and well crafted that the band "next big indie thing" label was definitely deserved. I ... read more

Chemtrails - The Joy of Sects

This has very cool riffs and attitude, somewhere in between The Fat White Family, The B-52s and Thee Oh Sees. Sometimes it sounds a bit too much like them, but there's enough personality to make me enjoy it a lot no matter what.

파란노을 [Parannoul] - Sky Hundred

This sounds like shit. It's supposed to be sort-of-shoegaze but these digital distortions are so crappy there's nothing to really immerse into, it's just annoying to the ears. Dude, even if it's recorded in a bedroom (I don't know, I suppose it is), you can use decent distortion pedals (or GarageBand plugins, again I suppose) and mix and master it in a proper way.

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police
45

I get this is the tiktok generation so a riff that stays always the same for 2 mins and that's it is the basic demand for a song, but god please next time add some variation, some chord changes, some dynamic. I've read a lot about this guy being "the new guitar god / Prince / genius producer / etc..." but this sounds just like yet another evanescent record I'm going to forget about in two days.

Desperate Journalist - No Hero

Not a fan of the poppiest moments, but the new wave parts are very good.

Drug Church - PRUDE

Average ultra-mid standard US alternative rock from 20 years ago.

Fat Dog - WOOF.

Klezmer gabber music FTW!

The Voidz - Like All Before You

God, this is so bad. Especially that All The Same song is one of the most boring shit I've ever heard. It sounds like a guy who's bored by hearing himself singing something boring while he's listening to himself singing and then falling in an infinite loop of boredom to the point he doesn't even know if he's awake or not or whatever who cares just release the song and see if someone is so much into The Strokes to force themselves to like it.

The WAEVE - City Lights
80

This is so Bowie that it's impossible for me not to love them.

Thurston Moore - Flow Critical Lucidity
80

I'm a Sonic Youth fan but Thurston's solo records really never made it to me after Demolished Thoughts. There was always something lacking in the songwriting, in his singing, in the production, that made me miss the other three guys. So I'm super pleasantly surprised with this new album. It contains some of his trademarks of course, but still trying some unexplored sounds and textures that creates that creepy/melancholy mood I needed, with no long out of place guitar solos, no ... read more

The Hard Quartet - The Hard Quartet

These guys are great, of course they are, look at the names, but I keep thinking that if this was a bit less Malkmus, a bit more Kelly, and a lot more Sweeney, it could have been one of my AOTY. I'll definitely go back to this because some songs are amazing, but half of the time it was just "ok Malkmus we know you do this kinda things, I get it, i know". I guess now I really want to hear a Matt Sweeney solo record.

Weezer - Pinkerton
100

This is their true masterpiece. It takes all the good stuff from Blue and adds more of everything. The production is impressive, with distortion here and there on everything. So many epic guitar moments. And I can really feel the band shameless quirkiness as the major value here, probably thanks to the brilliant Matt Sharp. Unluckily the next albums will never reach such level, not to say they'll be at least 80% crap.

Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)

Amazing songs, amazing sound, I have listened to this record a thousand times and it's always fresh, engaging, relatable (In The Garage is basically me in high school except that i hate Kiss) and most of all those guitars/bass always kick ass.
