Quite possibly the most overrated record of the 21st century. Also, a terribly uneven record.
Masterpiece: Suburban War
Excellent: The Suburbs, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Great/Very good: Ready to Start, Empty Room
Good: Modern Man, Rococo, City With No Children, Half Light I
Decent: Deep Blue
Mediocre: Sprawl I (Flatland)
Bad: Month of May, Wasted Hours, We Used to Wait
Terrible: Half Light II (No Celebration)
I'm not counting The Suburbs (Continued) as a track.
Having listened to this 9 times, I truly believe its not a good record. It doesn't have many flaws but it has two basic ones: first off, its underwritten and second is that certain tracks are quite longer than they should have been. There are no tracks for me that are true standouts but there are good ones. Those are If only, you would know, how to handle a rope, mexicola and you can't quit me baby. The rest are not worth one's time in my opinion.
I listened to it four times. Head like a haunted house is great and by a looooong shot the best track. Domesticated Animals is fine and everything else is unbelievably forgettable. Forgettable for several reasons: Firstly because on certain songs they have lost a significant part of their personality (fortress, un-reborn again, hideaway), secondly because on many songs there's just too much going on and last but not least the songs are just dull and underwritten.
