Sometimes the idea matters more than anything else, and you can overlook a lack of polish because of it. But here, it feels like random ideas are just being thrown at the listener. Of course, across 26 tracks there are a few interesting structures and promising song ideas, but even those don’t seem to pursue any larger goal beyond simply existing.

With this latest release from the band, I ran into some of my usual issues with them again - mainly with the vocals and the lyrics - but the instrumentals here actually surpass those on their third album. Completely unexpected, but this collaborative album has quickly become one of my contenders for AOTY. The entire listening experience just clicks - the tracks build an immersive atmosphere, each one doing so in its own way with distinct elements, and the tracklist feels remarkably consistent. It really got to the point where picking personal highlights came down to small details.
Looking more closely at the songs, the soundscape is rich and carefully crafted thanks to the fantastic production, ... read more
