y'know, i've always wondered what channel ORANGE would be like if it sucked, and this album answers that terrifying lucid dream
like at a certain point, it stops feeling like an aesthetic choice and it starts feeling like he just doesn't know how to use vocal compression or de-essing
or how to layer vocal harmonies without them clipping or getting crushed and oppressing the mix
or add in sub bass without it swallowing the rest of the instrumentation
or starting a vocal passage with an idea of ... read more
Normally I like writing longer reviews but literally all I can think to say is that this is music for people who made Stranger Things their whole personality. It's a crispy and modern take on psychedelia and 80 pop music, with memorable hooks for unmemorable songs. I totally see the appeal, just not for me.
In my eyes, DISCO4 :: PART II serves as baby's first industrial record. If you like rock music or even some heavier EDM subgenres, this is a good introduction to industrial aesthetics.
As someone who is already a big supporter of industrial music - such as the works of Uboa, Nine Inch Nails, Death Grips, Black Dresses or clipping. - I found this record to get a little stale by the end of its runtime. The production on DISCO4 :: PART II is quite easy on the ears compared to some of the artists ... read more
The biggest crime that Mercury - Act 2 commits is being incredibly uninteresting. The three-track run from "I'm Happy" to "Peace Of Mind" are the songs that jump out to me as being the worst, but beyond that, I have very little to comment on with this record. I'm a little sad to say that there aren't *any* surprises here, good or bad.
I saw an Instagram post last night that said that this album came out 9 months after Certified Lover Boy, and that means this album is the baby. If that's the case, then both the title and the sound of Honestly, Nevermind demonstrate that Drake is yet again being a neglectful and disinterested father.
This project sounds like being a bouncer outside of a sketchy, dingy nightclub. The kicks are mixed far forward, the hihats lightly flavor the music, the vocals sound thin and scratchy to the ... read more
While COMANAVAGO's Heart Failure is far from a bad album, to me it just sounds like if Disclosure were held at gunpoint to make end credits music to a cheesy romcom. (Even the album artwork feels very inspired by Disclosure's aesthetic, to be frank.)
I'm not a fan of it, but I can see someone more interested in dance-pop being really into this. The vocals are a little overperformed and the synths feel really dry, but none of the tracks here jumped out at me as being particularly better or ... read more
I had just joined the My Little Pony fanbase around the time this released, and I sadly missed out on this when it came out. A year or so ago, though, I stumbled upon this record on Apple Music and, out of morbid curiosity, decided to give it a listen. As soon as I heard the voice of Devi from Black Dresses on "Yellow Horse," I instantly knew I was in for a treat.
Fun Fun Fun is a cute, sleepy, faintly awkward indie pop record that I have a big soft spot for. As a former fan, it's ... read more
This album genuinely put me in a manic episode; I was walking to my car and listening to "FORBES LIST," and when I shut the door I had to scream my lungs out to get out the raw violent energy that that song - and the rest of this album - exudes.
Their Money Is Your Money is blown out and crunchy as all hell, and the lyrics read like a terminally online shitlord's rage-fueled ranting, and it's raw, unadulterated fun. There's a few songs that are relatively unmemorable, like the ... read more
"Better than channel ORANGE, but more sad," I was told.
Blonde is joyless, dreary, and flavorless, but I wouldn't say it's particularly sad.
While the mixing here is solid and the vocal performances are mostly good, the songwriting felt unmemorable and the production is so incredibly stark and empty that it's difficult for me to remember much of anything here.
I genuinely enjoyed channel ORANGE a fair bit, but I was begging for Blonde to be over by the last few tracks. Take away ... read more
