Fun lyricism and well honed indie rock instrumentation, with a dash of some other influences here and there, all add up to make Disq's debut LP a great listen. They prove they can easily stand toe to toe with any of their contemporaries. While not much is done to elevate the genre of modern alt rock, they have laid a solid foundation on which to grow.
Some sonically similar but still well crafted singles preceded this new Phantogram album. While those songs remain solid, the album surrounds them with forgettable deep cuts that left far more to be desired. After making it to the end, the journey as a whole can't help but feel like a tread through shallow waters.
Poppy has not only carved out her own brand of bubblegum metal, but at the same time has managed to blend the two genres nearly seamlessly. While some songs lyrically retread ground that has been covered by many before, their thematic mixing keeps you on your toes for a project that is a fresh listen the whole way through. Not an LP I will soon forget.
HMLTD manage to seamlessly blend several genres of music masterly on their debut album, creating tracks that are as memorable as they are original and experimental. From start to finish, this album keeps you on your toes. And when the end does come, it's tough to resist the urge to start right over from the beginning.
Threads of sonic similarity run throughout this Tame Impala record. If you vibe with this musical theming, I could see this elevating the album. However, if you don't, rather than elevating the material, it drag things down and makes some tracks feel twice their length. While it does have its moments, this project, on the whole, feels like a step down from the ideas they were exploring on their last album.
