Madonna - I'm Breathless: Music From and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy

When I'm in my deathbed I'll probably still be saying "justice for I'm Breathless". There's nothing to stop anyone from considering this a regular studio album for her: she's the lead in all the songs; she co-wrote half of the album and co-produced all of it; and only three of these songs are actually in the film. Hell, in 1994 she said herself that this was her favorite album she'd made. And it's amazing to me how well it works, how neatly she ... read more

This is the moment Madonna stops making "singles albums", like Like a Virgin and True Blue (as great as those singles were); it's when she really starts carving her name among the greats. Besides the iconic singles (title track, Express Yourself), there are some shockingly personal songs here (Till Death Do Us Part still amazes me) as well as some fun, lighter fare (Keep It Together!), and by the way: Madonna might be the only pop singer whose ballads I regularly enjoy. A bit of a singles album, but the singles are SO good that honestly who cares. Where's the Party is also a banger, and the rest isn't offensive either.

"It do take nerve to knock down Brat's lyrics while praising Imaginal Disk in the same review – I mean, that album is nearly all mumbo jumbo in the lyrical front. And sorry, but I'm not sure you have much knowledge of pop music at all if you think "any other average pop album" sounds like THIS. Not everything needs the Magdalena Bay everything-and-the-kitchen-sink, more-is-more-is-more-is-more-is-more approach to production."
