Joyner Lucas - Evolution

An artist who's wasting his potential drops an overly preachy and incredibly bland EP.

So many artists are doing a good job of portraying the current BLM movement, so why can't Joyner? A prime example of this is on the track Things I've Seen, which first of all has the worst flow I've heard in a while, but also doesn't even really have a message. It's just him saying whatever comes to mind and putting the word black in front of it.

We didn't need this EP. We didn't need a bunch of overused messages being talk-rapped to us over a bunch of stereotypical motivational beats. What's the worst part about it is that most of the features followed his horrible lead. I was at least hoping that they'd do their own thing so it could at least be tolerable, but they don't, so it isn't.

Man the production is bad. Half of the instrumentals sound like they would be on those motivational videos that are on the internet where it's just a guy screaming something to you along the lines of "If you want something... you gotta work for it! Life won't give you any free handouts!" and half the instrumentals are just corny and childish.

Lyrically this album flops too. Joyner's delivery is so cringeworthy and his chopped up flows and repetitive bars don't show any signs of using his talent. It just makes me sad knowing how good of an artist Joyner could actually be.

All in all, this is just a massive cornball of an EP with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's called Evolution, but it's clear that Joyner took a step backwards with this release.
