An infectious, groovy piece of 90s radio rock that rightfully reached hit status during its time. The medley of unique instrumentation and electronic accompaniments form a deeply layered and catchy sound that's kept at a good pace by the lingering percussion. The plethora of distinct melodies bounce off each other splendidly and allow for the track to consistently warp in style and remain engaging the entire way through. Steve's vocals have a unqiue level of grit and his cadence is quite ... read more
I don't describe art with this term often, but this really feels like a worthless project. I want to preface my thoughts on the music by saying that I really don't know much about Dream outside of that he's famous and what he's famous for. If he's a controversial figure, I'd have no idea why that is.
Returning to the EP at hand, I struggle to see anything distinguishing here. All of the concepts and themes Dream delivers on here have so little nuance and expansion that calling them incomplete ... read more
A dreamy exercise of impressionism in music. Utterly spellbinding on a sonic level as the beautifully restrained, somewhat haunting guitar tones mesh with delicate uses of reverb and psychedelic soundscapes to create a sound that's both ambitious and deeply comforting. The soothing vocals waft over the tracks in a gorgeous manner, effectively furthering slowdive's common experimentation with dream pop influences. The tones that are played with throughout the album are very light and everything ... read more
There is a profoundly angelic and poetic power that emanates from Ichiko's music, effectively creating a sound so delicate and beautiful that trying to put it into words almost feels like a disservice. The lush and elegant string accompaniments provide such a delightful and gorgeous atmosphere that it's as if we're momentarily granted a sonic glimpse of heaven. Effectively vibrant while also allowing enough restraint for Ichiko's breathtaking vocals to seamlessly glide over the orchestral ... read more
William Onyeabor: A Visionary Enveloped in Mystery
Who is William Onyeabor? A definitive answer to this question is highly elusive for a multitude of reasons, most notably due to his preference of remaining a reclusive figure throughout the course of his life. In the short documentary about his life, every claim made about who he was gets contradicted almost immediately by something else. When we are unable to trace an artist's life through the firsthand accounts of the artist or people who ... read more
Queens of the Stone Age is back in form after a somewhat disappointing stylistic turn in Villains.
When Queens of the Stone Age are really focused and feeling themselves, they’re capable of creating one of the most distinct sounds in music today. The guitar tone in this album is infectious and absolutely beautiful. Similar to …Like Clockwork, the tone here feels incredibly lush while also packing enough of a punch to give this album an effective hard rock feel at the same time. ... read more
Quadeca is back with a new single and it’s easily the best I’ve heard from him so far, however I’m not really blown away with what I heard. The production pretty much puts this track on its back as it’s easily the best aspect. The track opens with a very smooth and somber string rhythm that slowly builds with a few minor accompaniments while the volume sees a slight increase as well. There are also some electronic elements added throughout the intro to the track that ... read more
Bjork’s latest single is an amazing display of surreal mastery in a way that’s groovy and abstract, yet beautiful at the same time.
Bjork is, by all means, a top notch artist. The vocals, the production, the versatility, everything about her music is remarkable and the mark she’s left on this industry is larger than most artists can even dream of. Well, she’s back and it’s clear with this release that she’s only getting better from where she left off most ... read more
Arctic Monkeys returns with a great single that is steps above their other more recent work.
There’s something about the feeling of this track that’s really just too gorgeous to put into words. The production is really beautiful. It opens the song up with a very delightful feel as the chords lay out a beautiful pace and harmony for the vocals to build off of. These faint chords continue through the vocals and are accompanied by a slow, yet effective drum pattern. At about the ... read more
WOAH.
(Hello again. I’ll be making changes to the way I run my account from here on out. If you want, skip this review and go to the bottom paragraph to see my thoughts on the 7 month absence I’ve taken from here.)
Over my super long break from this site, I’ve listened to a lot of albums across numerous genres. Some of them have been great, others not so much. However, I haven’t found anything noteworthy enough to return from my absence for. That was the case until ... read more
(Apologies for the incredibly long break as well as for this review being shorter than mine usually are. There's not a whole lot to say about this project)
Gunna releases another bland, uninteresting album with nothing that sets it apart from his other releases.
At this point, I’ll really just always expect this type of thing from Gunna. For someone who’s reached his level of success within the industry, he really sounds like he could care less about music on this project. I ... read more
(THANK YOU FOR 300 FOLLOWERS!)
Danny Brown comes through with a wild, eccentric and electrifying hip hop record that’s unparalleled in nearly every metric.
This is the most unique hip hop project I’ll ever listen to without a doubt. Everything about this album is absolutely masterful and also incredibly experimental. There aren’t many albums that I’ve listened to that I would say are worthy of a rating of 100. However, this project exceeds incredibly well at ... read more
Kanye West releases a complete mess of a project that’s held together by the occasional highlight.
Describing this project is definitely tough to do seeing as there are so many contrasting and conflicting styles of music that have a presence throughout this gigantic run time. It really is a mess. It’s quite the inconsistent listen and the performances are a massive mixed bag as there’s a variety of great, mediocre, and generic artists that Kanye gave spots to on this ... read more
Kendrick Lamar has made his return and it’s just as great as I expected. Kendrick has always been great at adapting to the trap sound and here he continues to show that he can be a great trap artist too. While the main focus is obviously on Kendrick, it shouldn’t be overlooked how solid Baby Keem is on this track. Here Keem returns to his eccentric and energetic sound that helped push his way into the mainstream and it really works here. These two have an amazing chemistry and ... read more
Since I’ve recently talked about a great artist that I’ve recently discovered (that artist being Terrell Hines), I figured I’d review a great track from another artist who I’ve recently come across. The style that Terry Presume takes here is one that’s very bizarre and strange, yet also wildly entertaining at the exact same time. This track is one that I had to listen to a few times before it really caught on with me, but now that it has I can really see all the ... read more
When it comes to Injury Reserve’s music, it’s usually pretty straightforward with what you’re going to get. I completely understand why that is, given that they’ve already achieved peak performance with the more hardcore, industrial hip hop style that they’re used to. However, after the passing of member Groggs, Injury Reserve has returned with a truly heavy-hitting and out of this world track that is unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. From the moment ... read more
(Below the review I'll explain why I've been gone for such a long period of time since this is by far the longest I've been away from this site for).
As someone who loves listening to music, there's almost nothing more satisfying than discovering an incredibly promising artist whose music you really enjoy. In this case, not only do I really enjoy the style presented on this particular track, but I also think the catalog of Terrell has so far been a pretty great one and this is only one of the ... read more
This is always the style of Tyler, the Creator that I've preferred. While I think that his more melodic and light-toned style on IGOR was very impressive, it never really hit with me the same way that his more hardcore style has. Having said that, I still feel a bit underwhelmed by this track. There's no doubt that Tyler is unique as ever on this track as there's no other artist out there with a style as absurd, warped and gritty as this. However, there's definitely some lacking of energy ... read more
Bo Burnham releases a funny, yet emotional and thought-provoking special that perfectly tackles all of his talents.
When I joined this site, I thought I'd stay within the genres of hip hop and occasionally r&b in terms of my reviews. I told myself that the only reason I'd ever review something outside of those genres was if I encountered something that's incredibly special. Well, this is it. In terms of comedians, I've always put Bo Burnham up there with the best to ever do it. While ... read more
Baby Keem has always been a really interesting artist to me, regardless of what style he's attempting. While I've enjoyed all the previous smoother releases from Baby Keem quite a bit (hooligan in particular), I was a bit disappointed by this track. This was where Baby Keem really needed to harness all of his talent, because any track with Travis Scott can easily top charts if you just put on a good performance. While I think Baby Keem's performance was decent, he still put a very small ... read more
