There's a lot of controversy circulating about Mario Judah right now, and let me just say that in terms of my views on his music I don't care. I'll never let any sort of controversy affect the rating that I give pieces of music. I didn't change my DAYSTAR opinion because of it and the same applies here. I genuinely think this is a bad track. Now that I got that out of the way, the production on here might be the worst Mario's used, at least from what I've heard from him. The melody is ... read more
Kota the Friend releases a small portion of his best work which mainly suffers from being too short.
It's disappointing that he didn't turn this into a longer project, because this is easily his best work that I've heard from him. He really honed in his skillset on here and he's never brought out the life in his style more than on here. I also think that this is the best production he's ever used on a project as the chill lo-fi sound was really fine-tuned on here. This really just needed to ... read more
I had some pretty high expectations heading into this track. I really enjoyed Rav's release I'M ON TO ME and because if that I was hoping to get a quality single here. Well, Rav definitely delivered here as this is a pretty solid track. The production on here is pretty good. It has a really nice upbeat and kinda lo-fi feel that's executed very well and suited Rav's approach to this track. The melody has a very energetic and uplifting feel and the vocal harmony in ths background is pretty ... read more
This is my first time listening to anything from FKA twigs, and while her brief appearance was stunning, that doesn't excuse the fact that every other aspect of the song simply wasn't good. I might as well start off with FKA's performance given that it was the only good piece of this entire track. FKA's vocals were absolutely stunning on this track. Her voice is so smooth yet so powerful and she changes her pitch with ease. Her voice easily stole the show for this track as it just sounded ... read more
After the release of Little Dominiques Nosebleed (a record which I highly praised) I was very hopeful of what The Koreatown Oddity would release next. While this is far from what I expected, this is still a really amazing double single. The production on both of these tracks is astounding. The instrumental on Breastmilk had a very classic and somewhat vintage sound that's incredible to hear. The melodies are incredibly unique and complex and the accompanying bass and drums sound incredibly ... read more
It's definitely far from the quality of Keep Your Distance, but it's still a decent track. The production on here is pretty amazing. It has a really twitchy sound to it that's pretty cool to hear and it also includes a lot of unique and interesting melodies. It has a very nice feel of laid back aggression and it sets up Ameer incredibly well to put on a good performance. The few hints of bass and drums on here also sound pretty great and they add a lot of vibrance to this beat alongside the ... read more
Normally I find myself being fairly unimpressed with Mosey's releases. This track, however, is pretty good. The instrumental on here is one of the best ones Mosey has ever used. The beat oozes tons of energy and sets up Mosey incredibly well for a good performance. Not only is it incredibly upbeat, but it also sounds really smooth and refined. It's very rare to see a well-crafted melodic beat, but this is definitely one without a doubt. The melody sounds amazing and the constantly ... read more
Lil Skies comes through with an incredibly boring and uninspired project.
My expectations for this release weren't very high after I listened to Ok early. Looking back at it, I also realize that I was way too generous with my rating of that track, because it's gotten a lot worse to me after I've listened to it again. I think the biggest issue with this release is simply how much every track drags. Skies' vocals are completely dead on here as he decided to steer away from the melodic style ... read more
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan The Automator and Kid Koala come together for an incredibly unique hip hop masterpiece.
Real quick I just want to say that I plan to start being more consistent with my reviews again. I was really stressed out with finals and I was spending tons of time studying, but now that I've finished all of them I'm finally able to get back to this site and be more active. Anyway, much like my random review of Truth Hurts, I'm reviewing this project because I included it ... read more
The production and A$AP are the only reasons why this is a good track, because I just wasn't a fan of slowthai's performance at all. His vocals were incredibly strange and borderline annoying. The chorus he brought wasn't really anything impressive and lyrically he really didn't display much talent throughout this track. A lot of his bars were basic trap lines and every bar felt pretty uninspired. I don't know much about slowthai's music (the only other song I've heard from him is nhs and ... read more
Playboi Carti got everyone's hopes up only to completely destroy them.
We waited for this? I've never seen an album receive this much anticipation and hype before its release, and because of that I can easily say that this is one of the most disappointing projects I've ever listened to. I'm still not completely sold on what makes Die Lit great although I still think it's a solid release. With that being said, Die Lit is miles ahead of this record. Listening to all 24 tracks was a truly ... read more
MF DOOM and Madlib combine for a perfect rapper/producer combo.
When two artists that are top tier in their respected areas come together for a duo release, it's a guarantee that you'll get something amazing. Both DOOM and Madlib are unparalleled with their rapping and production as they both do it like no one else. Madlib is capable of putting together top notch instrumentals for every style you can think of and DOOM has the best unconventional flows that we've ever seen. It's truly a ... read more
This was definitely a very pleasant surprise from EARTHGANG. The production is pretty good. While it does drag at times, the somewhat lo-fi and kind of warped melody is amazing and it suits the fast and steady drums perfectly. It also was a great beat for showing off the loads of talent with both singing and writing that Johnny Venus possesses. His chorus on here was stunning. The vocals were perfect and packed in tons of life which really brought a nice upbeat feel to this track. He also ... read more
There's just nothing interesting about this track at all. Lil Skies refused to change his flow as he stuck with the same generic flow for the entire track. The production is also incredibly basic. The melody is just really boring and the aggressive bass and drums is nothing new. There really just isn't anything about this that feels unique. The vocals range from being completely dead to being too obnoxious for their own good and Skies never sounded good vocally on here. Lil Skies went ... read more
Sheff G comes through with a release that's loaded with half complete tracks and stylistic inconsistencies.
Sheff G really didn't understand where he wanted to take this. Sometimes he wanted to have somewhat of a drill sound, then he wanted to just be aggressive and remove the drill aspects, then he wanted to be melodic. When there's only eleven tracks, switching through three styles really isn't the way to go. It also doesn't help Sheff's case when you realize that he's not versatile ... read more
This track really drags for roughly the first minute until Choppa picks up his energetic sound. It is nice to hear him revert back to his more aggressive style though, as his style on From Dark To Light really felt off. There's not really anything special about the instrumental either. The melody is pretty boring and we know that Choppa is capable of selecting beats for his music. The bass and drums are pretty identical to what Choppa normally uses as his range of flows is relatively small. ... read more
The production on this track is pretty good. It has more of a mellower tone that fits well alongside the heavier bass and drums. The melody is pretty interesting and it's right up Boogie's alley. Boogie sounded pretty nice on this track too. He has a very unique voice that makes for a lot of entertaining performances. He could've done better on the lyrical front, but his flows were still tight and his rhyme schemes were pretty well-crafted. Joey was a nice feature too. While he didn't ... read more
Jack Harlow releases a very generic and derivative project.
I was very curious to see how much of a resemblance Jack Harlow had to Drake on here after seeing everyone say that, and yeah he sounds just like him at certain points. Rendezvous feels exactly like a Drake song and you can here the similarities to Drake on a few other spots of this project too. When you're on the rise, you should really try to make something unique. You need to let people know that there's a unique reason as to ... read more
Boldy James & Real Bad Man release one of the most unique classic hip hop experiences if the year.
Boldy James is always an artist that I've wanted to listen to more of, but I've never got around to doing so. I listened to Thousand Pills when it was released and that track made me very excited for this to come out. Thousand Pills left me with high hopes and this project definitely delivered. There's no doubt that this is one of the better releases that I've heard this year. When you ... read more
Kid Cudi keeps the adventure alive in a very impressive way.
First off, I need to mention how helpful Cudi's music has been to me over time. When I've been in my lowest points, I've gotten through it with Cudi's music. The influence he's had on me is something that I'll hold onto for a long time and I'll never forget the impact his music had and continues to have. I think that, while Cudi's discography is inconsistent, it ends up being the perfect depiction of life's crazy journey. Every ... read more
