The final record in Dylan’s “electric” trilogy. The first one was about telling the folk scene to fuck off. The second put all of American culture on trial. It sounds like The Smiths if they were less miserable or some dreamy version of The Clash if they were more about atmosphere. And yeah IT IS atmospheric. This production has a really deep, glossy, floaty feeling to it, and there are just SO many different tiny ear-candy moments and weird accents all over the place. Yummy. Maybe the light rain starting during my walk at the perfect moment boosted my impression but anyway, peak is peak.
I didn’t really get the appeal of the horror-movie side of the album but then it suddenly turned into this odd, explosive talk-show soundtrack thing and OH MY GOD that’s where it got me
I’m not in love with Marianne’s voice, it’s too smoked-out and grating for me, but this is still a pretty interesting folky, punky, synthy thing with a couple of atmospheric, hazy new-wave tracks. There’s even some kind of new-wave blues (?) here with Brain Drain. Loved the opener for that cold 80s atmosphere. The motif from The Ballad of Lucy Jordan strongly reminds me Dylan's Desolation Row. While The Beatles started moving away from silly love songs toward more complex themes with this album, I still find Rubber Soul to be the most romantic record in their discography. Songs like “Michelle” or “In My Life” are just so goddamn affectionate (let’s forget about “Run for Your Life” for a second please).
Yeah, it’s not as revolutionary as Revolver or as iconic as Abbey Road, but I swear this is their most atmospheric album. The later ... read more
