My favourite from Opeth, an almost flawless album, it has a perfect blend from the progressive death metal riffs and harsh growls to delicate acoustic guitar and clean fragile vocal passages. What makes it stand out is how seamlessly those extremes flow together, nothing ever feels forced, it's heavy and quiet when it needs to be and consistently engaging from start to finish.

Very early Bathory like with a strong icy, primitive and ritualistic atmosphere, despite the heavy influence it's distinct enough with it's wintry occult like identity but they haven't fully carved their identity like with there later releases. The raw lo-fi production really adds to the cold cavernous feel, and the occasional acoustic guitar really makes it seem more ceremonial. A very strong debut.
Justice for All 2.0 but faster and jazzier with hints of elements of their signature sound, yet never fully leaning into it. Quite consistent with no truly weak songs but the songs do go on for a bit too long. A solid and interesting debut though a little boring at times and they haven't fully found their style yet.
Step up from there last record but felt low effort and unfocused, also there worst album cover to date lol. Not bad but there's nothing really to praise here, just overall mid and quite forgettable.
I know its Technical Death Metal but it feels too technical and overproduced for it own good that it just feels like soulless slop. While impressive just because its super fast doesn't make it good like modern Eminem with his fast rapping, and I don't enjoy the vocals in this, also even then the songs don't even feel that unpredictable and underneath it feels predictable with basic structure but just super fast with the songs being too similar to eachother, overall kinda boring ... read more
