An album full of beautiful beats with a lot of cool bass lines and overall chill productions. Mos def is extremely entertaining, he always finds an interesting topic for each song and expresses his feelings in a passionate and vivid way with a lot of witty lines too. The storytelling is top tier as well. The album has plenty of variety with chill songs, singing performances, faster paced songs with features and even a departure with rock n roll. To me this is the pinnacle of 90’s rap, ... read more
Exactly what I expected. Most of Kanyes verses sound unfinished.
Mixing is pretty horrible.
2-3 standouts and a few decent songs along with a bunch of skips.
Impressed with Ty$ there were a few songs where he did well but Kanye completely ruined them with his awful verses which he only gets away with because he’s Kanye.
I gave it 45 originally but it just keeps growing off me even more💀
Is this an album that I often come back to? No.
But when I do listen to it I get so much out of it.
It’s so heavy all the way through except for Location and Voices which give you a bit of a break compared to the rest of the project. Most of the time the lyrics are easy to interpret but they still give you a lot to think about.
The production is pretty moody and minimalistic but still beautiful, matching Dave’s performances.
This is one of those albums that feels like a therapy ... read more
I’m all for artists trying out new things and taking risks however this EP didn’t work out for me. It kinda reminded me of Honestly, Nevermind in a way.
It sounds undercooked. Most songs just sound like unfinished ideas and the ones that sound like a finished product just aren’t as memorable or impactful as stuff on her other projects.
Even her personality doesn’t shine through on this album as much as it did previously. The lyrics and deliveries aren’t as ... read more
This album is wild. Production and sampling is amazing. Even though MC Ride’s wild delivery threw me off on first listen I realized that it work really well with the production. The hooks are soo catchy on this. Just think of hacker, get got, bitch please, hustle bones etc. A lot of lyrics on the album just sound like yapping to me which is the only reason I didn’t give this 100 (there are exceptions like I’ve seen footage and hacker though). Overall really loving this album ... read more
The chronic is more consistent than it’s follow up, 2001, however it’s not as memorable and doesn’t have the high points that the loaded with bangers 2001 has.
Because The Internet has some great songs and a pretty good start both musically and conceptually however both of these get lost through the back half of the album where most songs just sound like messy ideas with no real conclusion.
Prime example of a poorly aged album. The production is extremely dated and the back half is so weak.
I enjoy the album but not as much as I thought I would. This album does a lot of things right (elements of the production, his voice and charisma, content) but my main issue is that it does too much. There’s a lot of elements that are often similar to previous songs too which becomes overwhelming especially at the 1 hour length (which isn’t that long but in this case feels long) making me bored at some points.
“Smells like gas, think someone pooped”
Wow it’s boring af. He keeps dropping the same verse over and over again. So many terrible bars as well. The production has some highlights. The features are the only thing keeping this alive.
Edit: Ok I was too harsh on this project. Sure it’s not one I’ll often come back to but it still has a few bangers and solid production. 30 to 50
A consistently well produced and catchy record with some ridiculously good songs.
It was written is Nas’ second album and the follow up to Illmatic. The sound of this album shifts slightly from the boom bap sound. There are a lot of interpolations and samples which I think work for the most part. He raps about a wider variety of subjects than he did before. While the album is not as cohesive or consistent as his debut record was, It was written is still a good record, which at its highest points matches the brilliance of Illmatic.
Big L was ahead of his time as an mc and had one of the best voices in the genre. The production isn’t the best but his mic presence mostly makes up for it.
Edit: Growing off me 75 to 60
50 Cent is not the most interesting mc but he is great at making memorable hooks. The content matter is usually boring and nothing new. The classic songs and the star power behind it help a lot. Even though it’s definitely overrated there are more hits than misses on this.
