So much potential in the first half that was lost sharply halfway into the 3rd disc. The three-track run at the start with KRYPTONITE, TORE UP, and BROTHER STONE really gave me a false sense of hope that Don would actually have a jam-packed album for once. Instead, it soon started falling into his same old pattern, and while disc 2 was nearly as good as the first, the rest was mostly filler. I feel catfished. At least we got Uzi on the deluxe.
Unironically my favorite Kendrick album. Yes, over TPAB and GKMC. I can hardly explain it, I just prefer to listen to this over those other two. It’s very overhated and honestly another masterpiece by the Compton rapper. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you this doesn’t compare to his previous albums, because it’s messaging and lyrical content indeed rivals his previous work and often beats it in sheer impact. One of those albums that gets overhated for its immense ... read more
Hard to think of many criticisms here. Very enjoyable and packed with bangers. This will probably be looked back on as prime Tyler in about half a decade.
Seems like he’s falling on instead of off. An honorable last album for one of the most consistent hip hop artists of the 2000s.
That critic score is insane; this album is definitely overhated. Relistening in 2026 gives me a much different perspective than when I first heard it. The 4-track run at the start is actually insane, and one of the best runs of his career. THANK GOD and MODERN JAM are some of my most revisited songs off the album, and MY EYES is a given 10/10 song. So many bangers, and even throughout those hard-hitting songs it still feels like i’m floating through the cosmos going through the tracklist. ... read more
Might have some personal bias, but this album was such an era for me. Absolutely zero skips, and each track brings something new. STARGAZING is an absolute banger, and it’s still one of my favorite Trav songs. The tracklist holds very strong, and there’s really not much criticism I can say other than all the tracks are not perfect. Could be a top 10 album of the 2010s for me, as a pretty mainstream listener, though I’m not giving it high prestige because it’s a very ... read more
Might be a bit early because this album is still growing on me, but i think this is a quite consistent work and could honestly become my favorite Don album. His amazing voice is still delivering, and though the name “Octane” may not really match the feel of this album, I think it doesn’t really need to. Glad to see Don improving from his last work, which saw a huge fall-off in the second half of the track list. I think though he can definitely produce bangers, his more slow ... read more
