I'm probably one of the few people who came here for Chemical Brothers and not Aurora, but I really enjoyed her performances here along with Rowlands' production. Might be my AOTY so far.
For some reason I've noticed that a lot of acclaimed dream pop albums are in Japanese, so when I saw that this was in English, I got excited that I finally was going to be able to understand the lyrics.
That excitement ended shortly after pressing play..
I thought Yuno Miles was going to drop AOTY, but I was proven wrong..
He dropped the pinnacle of music itself, or at least half of it is. For some reason the first half actually features production more akin to that you'd see lame mainstream artists like Carti use, and his vocals subsequently change a lot because of this. Thankfully, we only had to wait like 12 minutes till we finally listened to the Yuno Miles we all love. No album (pun intended) in history can even compare to the ... read more
Giancarlo Esposito not only made me feel emotion while watching Breaking Bad, but he also almost me made cry listening to this on the bus of all places 😭
AOI 3, or 'Cabin In The Sky' as it is now called marks the return of hip-hop legends Posdnous, Maseo, as well as Dave in spirit (R.I.P. 🕊️). This album goes back to their older 90s sound managed by none other than DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Supa Dave West, as well as even Posdnous and Dave behind some beats (I didn't even ... read more
AOTY users only hate this album cuz it's called 'Deadbeat' and that reminds them of their father.
A slower take from her stuff with The Marias (which was already fairly mellow) but she still manages to come out with a really solid solo debut. Her voice is just as soothing as usual, though with a slightly more sombre tune to it, which I honestly quite enjoy. Though she's lying if she's saying 'Magnet' and 'Vueltas' are not for radio..
MF Grimm, a name that might sound vaguely familiar to some, as he was a friend of DOOMs and the guy who not only gave him the MF moniker in the first place, but also set him up to pursue his solo career post KMD. But saying he was only trivial for DOOM’s career is an understatement, as he was also working on his rap career of his own, working with the likes of Kool G Rap and even Dr Dre, but he unfortunately was shot. This left him in a coma, which he miraculously survived, but it left ... read more
How is this the highest rated TVOTR album on here? I mean it might have the cleanest production of their discography, but that doesn't mean anything if it's so damn boring. Ok that might be a bit too harsh, every song here individually sounds, for the most part at least, really good, but I really hate how similar they are one to another, which just makes it feel a bit bloated. There are a few exceptions, like 'Red Dress' and of course 'DLZ', but otherwise I ... read more
This album is AWESOME and it has everything I want a rock album to have, from the crunchy but raving instrumentation, to the soul-hitting but infectious vocals, in short it's just a perfect album, well that is upto the fifth track. For some reason it starts to lose its steam right around the middle, which brings up my biggest gripe with this band, their consistency. They can make some of my favorite songs of like, ever, but they just can't manage to make an album that's ... read more
Damn I didn't know you guys still had it in you??
I mean put it in this way, Pusha hasn't really been that noteworthy as of lately, Malice has only appeared on one whole song this decade prior to this album and Pharrell, as much as a fan as I am, has mostly been cooking soulless beats for the past few years. So yeah, can you blame me for not really being that excited for this album?
Well here I am appreciating the much matured duo, where they now aren't only rapping about drugs ... read more
For a 60 year old guy, I'm not sure what I'm surprised more at, the fact that he dropped an album at all, or that he made two club tracks (that he apparently self-produced). This is far from his finest work, but he certainly aged better than a certain Wayne fella, can't wait for more of these Mass Appeal releases!
I'm having a hard time deciding whether Kali Uchis or the album itself is sexier...
Kali Uchis comes striking again with not only one of the best albums of the year so far, but even the best one of her career yet. You can tell she wanted to make a more concise project this time around by fully focusing in singing in a single language this time around, that being English, as well as omitting features completely.
It starts off strong with 'Heaven is a Home...' and 'Sugar! ... read more
After listening to their previous EP, "Winter Break", I was pretty interested to see what these guys would come up with next. Needless to say, a guy from AOTY and his crew dropped one of the hardest albums of this year so far, and I'm all for it.
In my review of their previous EP, I mentioned that one of my gripes was mostly the singer, noting that while he sounded corny at times, I still saw a lot of potential, and I'm glad this album demonstrates that. Not only do they ... read more
I'm surprised an album this good is this hidden, and I feel like I and many wouldn't have even found out about it if it weren't because the beat on 'Write This Down' was used in the mashup with Biggie's 'Dead Wrong'.
The production and flows featured here are very akin to what you'd find on something like Nujabes' and Shing02's collabs or Cunninlynguists' 'A Piece of Strange', leaving you with some of the smoothest jazz rap ... read more
How are your B-SIDES gonna be better than your main albums? Ok, I might be exaggerating a little but I do think it's their most consistent by far. While it might not be the case, this feels like it was supposed to be the actual follow-up to Silent Alarm but it didn't have enough radio hits to convince their label into releasing it as such.
Bloc Party is definitely back guys...
Smash Mouth if they smashed their mouth while recording or something idk, this is hot ass lmao
Fat Jon deserves much more credit than he gets, he influenced many producers with his contributions to lofi hip-hop, including none other than Nujabes. So much so that we got two Five Deez remixes on Nujabes' debut album, as well as later working together for the Samurai Champloo soundtrack.
Now, Lightweight Heavy. This is a very chilly trip hop record in a similar vein as DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing...' is, but while it retains similar production styles and atmosphere, you ... read more
If only all executives respected the legacy of deceased artists like they do with Mac Miller. As Mac says it himself, "The devil always be right where the money is".
