SIMPLY AMAZING.

Opening the album with “Crisis”, you can tell that Jaco obviously didn’t want this album to sell at all. It’s a superb innovative and atmospheric work of art that I would’ve never expected from a supreme player in the likes of Jaco himself.

Whoever gave this album a 50 from Rolling Stone has absolutely no taste at all.

Favorite Track: (if you really MAKE me to choose) Liberty City, Blackbird, Word of Mouth

It’s kinda like diluted jazz but I do like it. Quite atmospheric you know, with all the reverbs and delays stuffs. What I do hate tho is how the guy insists on speaking, and even worse, with a part roadman accent……

It came as a bit of a shock to me that all the tunes here are in major.

It’s so nostalgic that it can make people who have the faintest idea of Minecraft feeling nostalgic 😭😭😭

Wish it plays just a little bit less 12-bar blues. Nonetheless, it’s still a fantastic record.

I don’t like the production of vocals on this.

It crafted a whole new sound scheme at the time, an out-of-the-world experience, an absolutely masterful work of art.

It is quite an experience eh? Not many folk records I would confidently say I like them. YET I LOVE THIS.

I feel like this is weirder than most of the folk records as the tale that is told through it is nowhere as simple, or I should say, as within the touch for people. While still put together coherently, the pieces, their instrumentations, and lyrics altogether elicit a bundle of different emotions. It’s weird ‘cause I know technically speaking, this would be a better album than “Either/Or” yet my heart says the other way around.

This is objectively the better album because the sound quality’s better, the overall sound is more complete and mature, they both sound quite fragmented tho. I’m not entirely sure if I’m a fan of the stringwork or not. It just sounds a bit too overpowering, but it could well be because of the balancing/mixing that I don’t really appreciate on this.

The album plagues the same issue I have with Bossa Nova in general that the harmonic and rhythmic movements are all aligned between different players, which makes it sound a bit too still and boring for me. However, I wouldn’t dare to say that this album is bad by any means. ... read more

I guess I just don’t like folk music…

This is quite a boring album. In a time when jazz music became more experimental and free, Oscar chose to stay in, I don’t know, 40s? Not even bop players in the late 40s played that many straight up blues.

If they would’ve played their ass off like they did in “C Jam Blues” and “Honey Dripper”, I would have also appreciated this more. And the only tune that feels somewhat original is “Hymn to Freedom”, to which I don’t feel too pleased ... read more

This album tries too hard to sound complicated.

Sounding raw as fuck is completely okay, but you’ve got to be genuine with it. All the players here play like hell just to feel like they are actually something that they’re not. And I hate that the rhythm parts are always so broken up, leaving no room to breathe within. And there’re also cheesy as fuck tunes like “Summer Rain” and “Joy”.
