oh no, my dub is too juicy, my bass is too groovy, my vibes are too on point. such a joyful record, really great to listen too, peak of ambient dub ngl
... read more
i felt into this album like into a daydream or a fever
the soundscapes and textures are amazing, "HHLL / age of capricorn", "somewhere / naraka" and "deep time" are immediate favourites. "you retreat" is a nod for the old fans. all tracks have something unique and cool going in them. this is dark and dissociating geogaddi's burning twin
this album made me think that all the wars, forest fires, cults, drones, governments, layoffs, famine, oil, ... read more
this was all over the place DnB with modern classical / jazz fusion arrangements, super vibrant and chaotic and very fun listen
i feel like it lacks some chemistry and, ironically, focus, and i feel like it would be an AMAZING record if done with a live ensemble
great experiment though, i am happy that i listened to that
ngl, i bumped "young folks" and "feel good" covers for a while, but this feels so burned out low effort fun, i'm sad to say this but this is a no. might be okay as set of youtube covers, but as a concept album, this sounds like a set of demos, both sonically and conceptually
14 minutes with a strong vision, future bass / dofflin samples, solid hooks and melodies
this is one of the strongest 2010s kpop releases, it really shines, and if you're new to the whole LOONA thing, this might actually work as a gateway drug. just thinking about the song like Girl Front makes me happy, and listening to it feels magical every time, for many years already, and many more years to come
i'm revisiting BOC records, and this one feels like a weird place
peaks are peaking. long-form "reach for the dead', "nothing is real" and "new seeds" are legit lofi hauntology dissociation bangers
short form "etudes" are nice, but does not exactly bring more to the table or diversify the palette. they mostly feel undeveloped, and some of the longer once, that reach 3-4 minute marks, feel like dragging a bit too much
this is not an exciting listen ... read more
i don't know how to explain, i can listen to this on repeat for hours and plugg production shines here and it still feels like a decent 6. both MIKE and Earl have stronger moments in their discography. it's a fun rollout and a fun experiment, with all love and respect
stock photo of nicely dressed people listening to upbeat club remixes on the dancefloor of a fancy bar
it's not bad, and it's a feel good energy music, and i bet that some of your friendly local DJs happy that this EP dropped and will play a few of these songs in their sets. no hits here, but no bad moments too. i also cannot call it an unenthusiastic record, but would not call it exactly enthusiastic too. it's okay
peak hauntology dissociation classics
strongest tracks (music is math, gyroscope, sunshine recorder, julie and candy, 1969, the beach at redpoint, alpha and omega & dawn chorus) are tied together with short etudes, giving a room to breath between dense and insanely layered tracks
i love the way this record flows, i love the synths and broadcast vibes. i'm not sure if the drum programming on this album felt dated and vintage when the record was released, but now it surely does, and ... read more
the title track is neat, but i feel like for 15 minutes this record has too many problems with pacing
HALO is dragging, the record overall feels very restrained, like it's holding the power before actually showing off, and takes first 7 of 15 minutes to establish the sound, then drops an ASMR anthem, a pop-hit, and then gives an Oklou style ending
this might be my personal taste, but i feel like the overall restrained fashion-photoshoot feel prevents Yves from shining on this records. ... read more
relistened to it giving a full attention and it still sounds exciting and very lively, especially for a record with drone and field recording vibes. can't imagine how new and fresh and epic this sounded in 1997, this is crazy
features are great, madlib & no i.d. & kaytranada & doom & black thought could elevate this to an generational mixtape if it had more clear direction. feels better than mid, but does not live up to the features
chuu has such a great personality and dancing skills, i wish this album was not generic and had actual songs that feel like they're not copying popular pop songs like tyla's water. chuu is playing it so safe it's boring, a very mediocre record
i enjoyed her previous releases "howl", "strawberry rush" and 'i only cry in rain" much more, they had some vibe and some memorable tracks
i guess it's called lotus, because it unfolds into an increasingly more beautiful and meaningful image with each listen
"blood / lootus / lonely / blue" is an unbelievable run, and the rest of the album is on the same level
my only unfav track on the record is "young", it feels out of place, but maybe growing up for me means i'm not judging young. great record, top of the year for me for sure
OK!
i was not following daoud, but heard his production on some Saba's records, and was excited when heard that this album came out, then was excited to listen to it, kept in rotation for a few months since release, and can confirm that the grooves are real, the energy is amazing and that some of these tunes (i'm looking at you, la fievre) have melodies that are so catchy, that they pop up in your head randomly and invite you to listen to this album again
what is important is that ... read more
7 years and i return to this album almost monthly, wtf
very personal, very direct, no fillers, straight to the point, storytelling is the key here, production shines, one of the bestest hip hop records of 2010s.
such an exciting listen!!
soul + vibe + joy + hard truths + bars + many SOLID tracks + a few okay songs + epic guests + melodies
i still think CARE FOR ME is stronger, for personal reasons and storytelling, but this one has stuff like "How to Impress God" which is honest as fuck. if this end up as my top album for this year i won't be surprised, even that's one of the strongest years for hiphop ever. No I.D. makes the sickest beats, Saba spits bars and tells stories, they ... read more
