While I enjoy the production, I do sorta feel that this is generic within the genre. Has some solid production but apart from the closing track, BROKENHEARTED, it lacks real personality for me, and feels surface level. Rising to the top and dreaming and improving is to Jazz Rap as drugs are to Trap-- at a certain point, you gotta put your own spin on it. And I don't feel like that's really done here. It feels like more of an imitation on this project. I think the best in this genre ... read more
i vibe with the second beat but Drake's gotta stop doing these accents and not a big fan of Central Cee
Just a banger-after-banger dance album from Tyler. It's hard to compare to the rest of his discog because his last 4 are all so much more thorough-- this feels much more like a mixtape. Quick, energetic and stylish. But also crazy enjoyable when played in the right environment (car drive goes crazy w this).
Coming off of Chromakopia and having this so soon, I just am glad to have another project to listen to, and this does feel like a piece that was missing from Tyler's catalog. Does ... read more
Really nice project from Clipse & Pharrell. Up until the last few weeks I had only listened to Pusha T solo and wasn't aware of Clipse, and admittedly when So Be It came out, I liked it but I was a lot less impressed than everyone else was. However as the rollout has progressed, I've started to really catch on to Clipse's vibe, and overall I think this album feels classic but fresh at the same time. With a stacked feature list and A tier production from Pharrell, this really ... read more
This is lower rated than some of Justin's other albums for me, but I respect it a whole lot. It's just a bit boring and bland. However, the production and stylistic choices here are easily the most unique of Justin's career and so I feel like my opinion on this one will align a lot more closely with the rest of AOTY than usual. Like it's just a solid late night R&B album; not really generic at all, which is a career first for Justin. Does that make it particularly great? ... read more
I like a good amount of this project; I think the strong suit overall is the production-- Kashgetter is a clear standout with a crazy beat, but throughout the synths sound really cool and create a nice vibe. That said, I feel the biggest weakness on the project is the actual rapping. There are moments of really good sounding vocals, so I have no doubt that Kashways has the ability to make really good sounding rap eventually, but for now I feel that a lot of it lacks a lot of confidence and sort ... read more
If this is the direction of ICEMAN, Drake may regain his past success for sure. Not in love with the hook, but he sounds a lot more alive and both beats are really nice.
It's one of the most unique TOP songs they've made, and I strongly believe it will grow on skeptics a lot in the album context. I really love the autotuned chorus.
Gorgeously crafted 8-minute song by Quadeca. Quad has been significantly too experimental for me in the past, and felt like he was creating songs that were off-kilter as a replacement for making music that resonated on a deeper level, but that can't remotely be said about any of these songs. These are deeply resonant tracks that also happen to be remarkably complex at the same time.
Even with some iffy singles, Simz comes through with a soulful heartfelt project following the parting ways of her and her longtime producer Inflo. There are some explosive songs here, as well as some beautiful mellow ones with carefully penned production by Miles James. Simz also has some really nice lyrical tracks throughout. I would put it on par with No Thank You as a project— mainly due to some songs being a bit languid, a little basic on production and a bit less robustly ... read more
