The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

the bluedy moose

This is an album that has certainly earned its mark in the classic rock landscape. Not only did it help kickstart the Prog genre, I've also been made aware it was the first concept album, or at least one of the first. As such, it's a good album and I respect it a lot, but I think it does a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong.

The arrangement and the overall concept is honestly really lovely. The songs really capture the feeling of their respective daytime ... read more

actual mythic pull, thank you ambrose kenny smith 2009 skating video

This is one of those albums that made me think "wow, why have I never heard of this guy before?". Rodriguez deliveres a folky album with some bluesy and psych rock elements and, oh boy, this is SO up my alley!

The songwriting is just so spot on, i can see a lot of Bob Dylan influence on here, but Rodriguez adds his very own style to it. The lyrics are razor sharp and delivered with a beautiful vocal style that ... read more

wtf i love nu metal now

SOAD start their discography off quite strong and poignantly. I seem to review a lot of bands with great debuts lately (Primus, AiC, King Crimson) but I digress.

Yeah it's odd, the guys showed up and just IMMEDIATELY had a very strong, unconventionial and unique identity and aesthetic. System of a Down put out a banger that is heavily inspired by the boundary breaking properties that is the 90s rock and metal landscape and decide to push those boundaries even ... read more

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

bop dylan

Yeah this album is regarded as an all time classic for a good reason. This style of the 60s Folk Rock has been coined by Dylan and is genuinely an all time great. I do however not quite think it's a perfect album.

To get the obvious out of the way - yeah, this guy can write a song alright. The tracklist doesn't miss in the slightest, I'd consider the entire album timeless, but with this beautiful opener of "Like a Rolling Stone" it gets quite clear how ... read more

"This next song is about pain"

Alright, I'm finally getting to review my favourite band's discography little by little now. I thought i wasn't gonna overrate this, but I might've been wrong, because honestly I still quite adore this album.

This is a fantastic debut album from AiC, a band that would also play a huge role in the Grunge movement. However, I've always treated this specific album as more of a metal record, and I'll continue to do so. ... read more

Primus - Frizzle Fry

primus really rocks

As someone who has been having a soft hyperfixation with this band lately, I can't help but still be surprised at how immediately strong this debut is, both in its tracklist and its formative identity which Primus turned out to be. It's like they kinda just immediately knew what they wanted to be, breaking countless boundaries of its contemporary rock landscape and entering the scene with a roar.

Yeah this album is honestly so much, they take so many ... read more

WHEN TOMORROW HITS IT'LL HIT YOU HARD

Mudhoney's self titled album is in pretty much most respects the same as their prev. EP Superfuzz Bigmuff. In writing and performance it stays in the same lane, this one however has arguably the less dirty riffs, but presents itself with a more uptempo, punky energetic song structure, overall better production and they play around with some cool concepts.

Purely creatively, it doesn't break any ground, but if you like the early years of the ... read more

Soundgarden - Louder Than Love

the fuck did kevin's mom do...

So this album kicks decently ass. It's a big step up from their debut, but still some paces away from showcasing what this band would be capable of later down the line. Chris Cornell's vocals hit more of the 'refined rage' characteristics we get to hear from him on their really big albums and their songwriting gets genuinely more intriguing here already. Maybe it's because of the production, but the more explosive tracks really come ... read more

Björk - Medúlla

i need to study this womans brain activity

Björk takes quite a different direction for her acapella album 'Medúlla', as it's probably one of her most experimental and out of line projects to date. Admittedly, I'm not much of an acapella fan myself and this album couldn't do much to change that, but Björk has such a good and unique read on music as a whole that she manages to pull it of quite amazingly regardless.

The tracklist is honestly a bit ... read more

scary red guy

Yes I got around to treat myself to this little cornerstone of an album the other day, and I can confidently say it is as great as the peeps say it is!
As a fan of any late 60s/early 70s prog rock I ever got in contact with, you could of course never make a mistake to feed me an album like this, but even upon a relisten it kinda just keeps amazing me. These are some of the best compositions I have ever heard, performed beautifully by the band too. Each individual song also paints ... read more

Nirvana - Bleach

funny shirt band

Nirvana's debut is also a pretty solid, yet purposefully unrefined starting block for the band's discorgraphy. It definitely has the occasional banger and doesn't really do anything wrong, but at other points doesn't entertain my attention all that much. I especially like the presence of Kurt's already untamed screams, as well as the pronounced grungy basslines, but where it falls flat is in the writing of the individual songs, something the band ... read more

Soundgarden - Ultramega OK

juvenile soundgarden

The attitude is definitely here, but the songwriting is really behind all their following albums. The Album feels also very frontloaded, since I'll be hard pressed to find any memorable songs in the second half besides 'Smokestack Lightning'. It shows ambition at times, with very technical guitar passages and odd time signatures, but it doesn't quite stick yet. None of the main tracks are any bad by any means, but most are definitely forgettable and ... read more

Zaphyre - lifeforce

thanks to Yuri 2356 for uploading the album to yt

Yeah, this albums has strengths as well as weaknesses. Zaphyre shows a lot of promise as a producer, the album is a super cohesive listening experience with spacey and funky soundfonts. The mixing is very competent across the board.

But also I think my flavour palette is not built for whatever this genre is. A lot of the album unfortunately merges into a uniform blob at points that is pleasant to listen to, but ultimately not awfully ... read more

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff

very entertaining, very energetic, very hairy

Mudhoney pioneers the Seattle Grunge movement with a rough yet fun start. The guitars really are super fuzzy, with riffs that are effective and and a tempo that really rocks.

This is not a musical masterpiece and it's not trying to be. It's basically just a bunch of guys being fed up with the sound of their time and making sounds of their own. I like it, I like the EP, I like the aesthetic, I don't like everything they do here but I ... read more

sorry kiddo, grunge isn't real (but it's still good music) and here's why

So i've listened to a fair bit of the big Grunge names in my youth and i absolutely adored them. Seattle based band 'Skin Yard' was a name that came up every now and then as a band that, as people say, helped spearhead the entire movement and never got the recognition they deserved.
I knew virtually nothing about Skin Yard, but this album has Matt Cameron on it and Matt Cameron kicks a lot ... read more

Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward

nice synthy, not much to say

Yeah Depeche Mode is cooking really interesting music during their time, it's very easy to see why they made such waves in the musical landscapes with their sound!

Even after all these years, these synth instrumentals are just so damn cool. Sure, some of them didn't age flawlessly by todays standards, but they very much just immediately grab my attention, they're just composed so well, punchy industrial, yet with some ethereal melodies in the ... read more

David Bowie - Let's Dance

bowie dance poppin, nuff said

Coming back to this record after finding out about some of Bowie's past controversies is surely weird, especially after having been a bit of a David Bowie superfan in my teens. Does leave a bit of a bad aftertaste, especialyl with Iggy Pop being the co-writer for 'China Girl' and such, kinda just drags the album down a tad.

This album isn't among Bowies strongest to begin with, but it has some highlights.

pink floyd's legendary wall huh

I've postponed my revisit on this album for a LONG time up until now, entirely because the topics of abuse, mental breakdowns and suicidal yearnings were pretty triggering to my teenage self. Now that i got to enjoy it in full after all the years, I have to say it's pretty great, but obviously quite a different direction for the band.

The Rock Opera style here is a fresh coat of paint from their previous long proggy tracks, but definitely a very ... read more
