Amy Winehouse is an icon of British music & modern soul; she blended jazzy instrumentation with the themes and vocals you'd expect to hear in the Neo-Soul movement in a way that makes her stand out & stand the test of time. All this being said, what exactly makes Back To Black such a brilliant Sophomore LP?
First & foremost, the instrumentation is just iconic. From the trilling trumpets in tracks like Just Friends to the powerful chordal bass-line present in the Title-Track ... read more
I want to try and write a really long review on this LP by the end of the year, but for now all I will say is on simply the first listen, I feel like my perspective on love, life and the mortality of both myself and others has been shifted in a way not many pieces or art could effect me I feel. For that reason this project ranks among the best I've ever listened to from vulnerability alone.
Every Song on this short EP ties together as a showcase of each band member individually, as well as a synthesised track of each and every member getting "their moment" with the opener John Francis (Buy My House). Overall this is a tight project that has ups & downs, but really demonstrates the strengths & promise this band has. I wish Lacross Club luck going forward because I can see them going far with the right eyes on them.
The guitar in this song really leads the rest of the instruments, being the main thing I go away from this track remembering. As powerful as the guitar can be in this song though, it can overpowers the other parts of the band, that and the songs length really leave me coming away with little to say.
Really short track, getting wrapped up in under a minute which really disappoints cause I loved the focus on the bass in this track. Just goes to show how underappreciated our instrument is in the larger scheme of things...
The debut song for the band an honestly an iconic start that I couldn't really criticise all too much. Messy in the best way possible with Cai's vocals really being a major selling point of the song, the almost offbeat vocals really add to the deranged feel of this track and the thick layering of this track just goes great for what the band are going for.
