Love of Life falls into a common trap in the Swans discography; being sandwiched between some of the greatest records of their respective decades. In leaving meaning's case, it falls between The Glowing Man and The Beggar. In My Father Will Guide Me's Case, it lands between Soundtracks For The Blind and The Seer. And in Love of Life's case, it rests between White Light From The Mouth of Infinity and The Great Annihilator.

After the apparent recession that was The Burning World in 1989, Swans was dropped by UMG as quickly as they had been signed. Gira then decided to form his own record label, creating Young God Records in 1990. In 1991, the first Swans album of the 90's would release, and thankfully The Burning World was not a sign of things to come.

After Children of God, Swans released a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." This cover would garner a fair amount of attention, and would see the band sign to UMG, or Universal Music Group.
