Robert Rich - Somnium
76

Robert Rich’s “Somnium” is a seven hour long album created in the purpose of re-enacting the infamous sleep-concerts conducted by the artist during the late 80s and early 90s. Specifically, these events consisted of the artist performing subtle, yet immersive live ambient drones intended to last all night and render the listener lost in a state of ‘hypnagogic dreaming’, where they let their subconsciousness wander in a liminal space between consciousness and sleep. ... read more

Tim Hecker - Norberg
80

This EP is actually a live recording of a twenty minutes song recorded at the Norbert Festival in Sweden. The performance is made up of four (more or less) distinct sections. It starts with what sounds like glitchy, reverberating bells or chimes repeating on and on as they get drowned in this fuzzy and warm static white noise, which is a sound that stays during the entirety of the song.
A long, drawn out organic pad then replaces the previous part, and starts deforming and distorting alongside ... read more

Rolf Julius - Music for a Distance
72

Rolf Julius is a German artist well known and respected for his audiovisual installations and minimalist musical composition. Music for a Distance is a project he embarked on for six years, until his life was unfortunately cut short in 2011. His music label released it a few months after his death.
The first and main song, the 40 minutes title-track, is an interesting composition of minimalistic music, and the sounds displayed on here are nothing short of intriguing. A mysterious, fascinating ... read more

Panchiko - Failed at Math(s)
65

Panchiko are back, and this time they finally released their highly anticipated debut album on which they continue doing what they do best: writing soft and dreamy lo-fi pop ballads which, while not being the most creatively interesting nor mind-blowing music I’ve heard, still contain a charm that grips the listener in a delightful way. Here’s a little track by track review of the album:

The opener is this fun and melodic song that reminds the listener of the aesthetics embraced in ... read more

파란노을 [Parannoul] - To See the Next Part of the Dream
67

On this ambitious and personal LP, Parannoul presents his take on a shoegazey post-hardcore rock sound to which he adds a really strong touch of lo-fi and rawness (for example, the heavily distorted drums and the overblown guitars being the predominant sound for the most part). Although they bring a passionate character to his music, I feel as though these elements sometimes drag a lot of the songs down: the extremely rough and compressed nature of the production, which often reveal to be ... read more

C418 - Minecraft - Volume Alpha
83

Comprised of one short ambient and electronic melodic masterpiece after another, C418’s Minecraft - Volume Alpha is a carefully concocted, masterfully crafted universe of its own, embodying sentiments of nostalgia and peacefulness in a way that exalts it as a timeless masterpiece, all the while making up for the perfect soundtrack for a legendary video game.

青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba] - 0
85

The first couple of times that I listened to this thing, I don’t think I paid that much attention to it. I enjoyed it quite a lot, but also found it a bit unembellished and one dimensional, and never really gave much more mind to it.

Fast forward a couple months later, I’m on vacation in the countryside, and one night, I was in the car, on my way back to the hotel. Out of nowhere, I decided to listen to the album again; I was in the mood for it, because I was tired and I wanted ... read more

Radiohead - Kid A
87

Note: I never thought much of this album until one day, recently, I simply randomly listened to it, and it just clicked with me, instantly becoming one of my favorites and inspiring me to write this review. This is my first review, I don’t usually do this stuff. I will simply vaguely go over each track, and what they make me feel or mean to me, so enjoy I guess.

Radiohead’s Kid A is one of early 21st century’s most critically acclaimed and legendary album, as well as a ... read more
