Quite good, quite immersive. Very beautiful at times, such as the last minute and 15 seconds of “Like the Fourth Wall”.
Could really really really benefit from a less “wide”, more punchy, more tight drum sound. Trying to actively listen to the drums feels fatiguing because of how washed out and noisey they sound.
This album is good but it leaves me with much to be desired. Doesn’t scratch the same itch that their first two EPs and first two LPs scratch. The fact that this is the same band that wrote I Wish I Was There While the Sun Set feels a bit disappointing.
Embark: 75
Love Weapon: 91
Stargod: 20 - This song is so ass oh my god ðŸ˜
Third Shot: 85 - This song was a 75 to me on first listen but it grew on me
Dream Protocol 88: 80
Beneath the Lights: 90 - The first 1min 40sec of the song ... read more
Something about Dream Theater making a song about 9/11 with a fun ass instrumental section feels so unserious to me.
Favorite: The Root of All Evil
Least favorite: I Walk Beside You
This sounds to me like a musician just putting out some music that he made for fun, without taking himself too seriously. I appreciate it in that sense.
A surprise drop was definitely the way to go about this. No rollout vs rollout on a project like this is the difference between a “that was neat” 6.5/10 and an “I’m disappointed” 6.5/10.
Favorite: high tides
Least Favorite: LOOKING FOR PARKING
Very bloated, but very high highs. Certainly far better than Arcane’s other albums, imo.
My favorite tracks, in no particular order, are Unturning, Selfsame, Learned, Hunter Heart & Home, and Nightingale’s Weave. I consider all of these tracks to be some of Jim’s best work, right up there with my some of my favorite Caligula’s Horse tracks.
I fully blame Sleep Token and each and every one of their monthly listeners for this.
The whole outro section is amazing, but the rest of it is relatively weak.
Emphasis on “relatively”
EDIT: 85 -> 93
Sun just keeps growing on me at a rate that the rest of the album isn’t. Definitely one of my favorite songs on the whole album.
“Sun” only: 85/100
Glad this song wasn’t on the album, it doesn’t fit the vibe of the album.
It’s really good tho. When it switches back to the first beat in the middle of JID’s verse that shit goes hard.
I don’t think most of The Black Keys’s music has aged very well, but this song is a MASSIVE outlier. This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Sidenote: I know this single has the radio edit on it, but I don’t care. I’m rating the album version here.
Such a massive downgrade from The Last One. They went from an authentic prog metal sound to... whatever the hell this is. Pop metal? It sounds awful. Especially the drums.
