It's not a bad album, it's just that it doesn't feel "final": doesn't have the stakes, the scale, the ambition, perhaps thought and effort too. It comes as pretty obvious that the album wasn't meant to be THE final album at all, it just became so at one point, so they "adjusted" some songs, but not nearly enough to make the album feel like an ultimate "one shot at glory".

I listened to this feeling like I would come back to it often but then never actually did again, and I can understand why. This album is insanely stale.

Sounds slightly pretentious and too focused on void technicality. Pretty unmemorable
While some songs here can get slightly repetitive and uneventful, I seriously think some people like to judge Slipknot based on how they later influenced the metal music world (in some unfortunate ways too), forgetting that they were amongst the first to do songs like this. Both this album and Iowa have some serious and sincere, although edgy and immature, climaxes of negative emotions, which is something that's not quite replicable.
