Reviewing every must hear #40
Shorter review on this one. Empyrean Isles is an interesting hard bop album, knowing what Hancock would go on to do. The instrumentation is really well done, but I did find it a bit boring at times, though that could be because I'm a bit burnt on jazz. The tracklist isn't very notable until the last song, "The Egg," which I interpreted as a song detailing the creation of the world. Overall, on this album, I'd recommend it to jazz fans, but ... read more

This is what The Beatles sounded like to moms in the 60s. This album is genuinely non stop insanity. Everyone is playing at 11/10, but the guitar work especially is incredible. This album kept me entertained all the way through ... read more

This album is incredibly hard to get into if you haven't heard a lot of other jazz. If you are trying to get into the genre, listen to Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme. The instrumentation on this album is really well done and incredibly consistent, though it never reaches the highs of others in this genre. That's really all I have for this one. I'm running out of things to say for jazz besides good instrumentation unless it is exceptional.

That one dude summed it up really well but cool concept just needs work on the expcution
Thanks @Mmmvbnn2 for the recommendation and sorry it took me forever to listen to it.
This is going to be a shorter review because I'm writing another one rn but I need to get this out of the way. This album has really cool instrumentation and the vocals have really nice vocal effects on most of the songs.
Fav song: Feast Your Eyes

This album is a very calming listen blending jazz and samba in an interesting way, especially for the time. The instrumentation on this record is very well done but the vocals are just ok. From a songwriting perspective it is a very strong record. I really enjoyed this record and would recommend it.
Fav song: The Girl from Ipanema

To preface this review I will be comparing this to his previous record a lot. The Times They Are A-Changin' is a much more melancholic and straight forward record compared to The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. While his previous record asked a lot a questions and had a concept of lived experiences, this album doesn't leave any room for metaphor it is blunt about what it's saying, the government is fucked. I prefer the instrumentation of his previous ... read more

On this record Mingus takes a more laidback approach compared to his last record which while I prefer the larger more chaotic energy of BSATSL (not to say this LP lacks any of those moments) this is really great too. The instrumentation on this record is incredible and the energy is on point but the quality falls off steeply after the first song though the first song is one of the better jazz songs ever made. That being said I would recommend this album as a ... read more

Musically speaking Ben seems like an extremely forward thinking guy. The way this album was produced is way ahead of it's time and still holds up today. I don't really have any major complaints about the album but I do have good things to say about it. The instrumentation was genuinely some of the best I've heard in the 60s as a whole and the vocals are really well done. This album maintains a relatively warm feeling the entire time making for a fun ... read more

On this project Coltrane throws his hat in the ring in the realm of vocal jazz. Does he succeed though? .... kind of. Where this album excels is the instrumentation and I think Coltrane did incredibly at his job here not making it too complicated to the point it overshadows the vocalist but it has to be the right one, which in this case it is not. Hartman while his vocals are by no means bad don't complement Coltrane as well as someone like Nat King Cole or ... read more
As much as I love my favorite things this takes the crown for best jazz album
