Martinez's biggest problem on preceding records to 3rd LP 'PORTALS' was the fact that she struggled to stick to the concept of the album. Finally shedding away the 'Crybaby' character, maybe Martinez will finally figure out how to make a concept record front to back. Nope. 'PORTALS' gives up on the afterlife motif almost immediately. This album solidifies that Melanie Martinez is not a good writer of fiction.

"Pity Party" is the only saving grace on this conceptual mess, mainly because it's the only track that's written well (and does NOT use children's objects/activities as metaphors for explicit adult scenarios). If you're above the age of 12 don't bother with this album. It's clear at this point that Melanie Martinez doesn't know how to develop a storyline at all. At least on "Cry Baby" the storyline (while it was bad) was clear that it was going through the phases of the character's development and how she handles different events in her life. A well-thought out dance-pop album that was released at a time where releasing a dance-pop album with almost no thought other than “we like to drink, have sex, and party!” Robyn attempts to flip the status quo with “Body Talk”. Through pulsating synths, Robyn proves that club songs can still have good, thought provoking songwriting.
